So much gratitude for the last three years with Subtext Studio TC! We created amazing shows with amazing artists - and while we are sad to say goodbye to Omar we also look forward to the new adventures that Dragonfly Theatre will bring!
Look for introductions to our co-Artistic Directors in the next few weeks, and announcements of exciting future plans! 🥰

Due to the changes in company leadership, all artistic programming for the remainder of 2026 is cancelled, including the New Play Festival.

We’d still love to thank all of you for the moving work shared with us and to recognize those who would have been semifinalists had we moved forward with the programming as scheduled.

OMAR FERNANDEZ STEPS DOWN AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF SUBTEXT STUDIO TC

Hello friends,

I’m writing to inform you that | have made the decision to step away from my position as Artistic Director and from my participation in Subtext Studio Theatre Company, effective May Ist. This decision has weighed on me for quite some time, but I am now comfortable making it due to the personal challenges that this job has imposed upon me. This decision is certainly not easy for me to make but one that I think is necessary for Subtext to evolve as an organization, brand, or as individuals who have all advocated for the theater and myself in more ways than you may know.

I am forever grateful for all of you who have spent your time (and money) in making this company mean so much to so many people and for the patience you all have had in dealing with the pain and trouble that only a first-time Artistic Director could cause you.

This is a virtual hug to all of you until I see you again and I encourage you to continue the work, whatever that means to you.

Omar Vicente Fernandez

⚡️ Odessa by Dante Flores is Chicago Reader Recommended!

We are BACK for closing weekend! Make sure you get those tickets & read the full review through the links in our bio 😉

Odessa is a new science-fiction play about Sophie Pike, a young scientist assigned to a lonely research facility in western Texas. One evening in 2009, Pike witnesses a UFO crash-land in the desert and goes to investigate. She finds an extraterrestrial life form and brings it back to the facility. Unwilling to share her secret, Pike soon finds that her assumptions about herself and the human race are challenged at their roots.

Odessa is an exploration of the costs of human hubris amid technological progress, and the deadly pitfalls of assumed superiority.

We apologize to our community for taking our time in posting this as we have been preoccupied with the postponing of our production of Odessa. We decided to uninvite the Jeff committee to our current and future productions because of their silence to the concerns of the theater community as well as their decision to honor abusers. We stand in solidarity with the victims and fellow theater companies in their divestment to the Jeffs and encourage our friends, colleagues, and alliances to stand with them as well.
