The Front Porch Reading Series celebrates local authors, performers and writers in a open mic setting with a different featured writer each month. This Women’s History month edition, we are feauturing two Black women science fiction authors making significant contributions to a genre historically dominated by White men, Ytasha L. Womack and Maryck Allyson.

Front Porch Arts Center presents an evening of storytelling centered on protest, resistance, and community action.

This February, Long Story Short will feature activists, leaders, and community builders Arewa Najm EKUA, Deondre Rutues, and Athena Williams, sharing intimate accounts from the frontlines.

Through personal narrative, they will reflect on moments of courage, challenge, and humor.
The evening will also include an open mic, inviting attendees to share their own 5–7 minute protest stories in a supportive and dynamic space.

In celebration of Black History Month, join us at the Front Porch Reading Series + Open Mic for a special afternoon honoring Black storytelling, legacy, and history.

This February, we’re proud to uplift Black literature and community through the work of Essence McDowell celebrating her book Mapping a History of Trailblazing Black Women in Chicago.

From poetry to song, storytelling to freestyle, the open air carried every voice further than our walls ever could. Thank you to all the artists, neighbors, and friends who shared their gifts and spirit with us.
