I just finished my latest woodland creature! The Great Horned Owl (or Tiger Owl) is also native to Coastal Virginia.
This art was designed to complement "Portrait of a Raccoon". Both make use of negative space and accentuate a small amount of color. There's no question that the focus of the picture is the animal itself. I was drawn to the amount of detail in the bird and liked both the delicate nature and patterning of the feathers.

My newest Woodland Creature is finished!
I loved creating this with graphite and just a touch of spot color.
It took a delicate touch to capture the softness of the raccoon's fur and inquisitive look in his face. It's been a while since I used this much negative space, focusing almost exclusively on the animal. I merely suggested the other shapes but feel a certain dimensionality to them.
