We’re heading to Golden Pheasant Golf Club today for a day of golf, community, and support for P2 Autism Advocacy & Support. The event begins at 11 AM.

🎃 Tips & Tricks for Navigating Halloween 👻

Halloween can bring costumes, candy, flashing decorations, unexpected visitors, loud noises, and changes in routine all at once. For some autistic individuals, that can make an otherwise fun holiday feel overwhelming.

A little preparation and flexibility can help make the experience more comfortable.

Most importantly, let Halloween look different if that’s what works best. There’s no right way to participate, and staying home with a favorite movie or activity can be just as much of a celebration.

A little understanding from families, friends, and neighbors can help make Halloween more welcoming for autistic individuals and autistic families.

💡 An accommodation isn’t an unfair advantage.

It’s a tool that helps someone access an environment, activity, classroom, workplace, or experience in a way that works for them.

For an autistic individual, that could mean having access to a quieter space, receiving written instructions, using sensory supports, having additional processing time, or communicating in a different way.

The specific accommodation will depend on the individual, but the purpose is the same: removing unnecessary barriers so people have a fair opportunity to participate.

Independence doesn’t have to mean doing everything without help.

For an autistic individual, independence might mean making their own choices, communicating a preference, completing part of a task on their own, using an accommodation successfully, or knowing when to ask for support.

What independence looks like will be different for every person.

The goal is to create opportunities for autistic individuals to build confidence, develop skills, and have a meaningful voice in their own lives.

Connection doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.

Autistic individuals have their own interests, passions, ways of communicating, and ways of connecting with the people and world around them. Taking the time to discover what brings someone joy can open the door to deeper understanding and meaningful relationships.

🍂 Crunching leaves. Cooler temperatures. Earlier sunsets. Different clothes. New smells.

Fall brings a lot of sensory changes at once.

For some autistic individuals, those changes can be enjoyable. For others, suddenly needing a jacket, hearing leaf blowers, experiencing shorter days, or encountering unfamiliar seasonal decorations can take some adjustment.

There’s no “right” way to experience the season. Paying attention to individual sensory preferences can help make fall activities more comfortable and enjoyable.
