šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø Remembering the Heroes of Abbey Gate

Five years ago, on August 26, 2021, thirteen U.S. service members lost their lives at Abbey Gate in Kabul while serving during the evacuation from Afghanistan.

They were Marines, a Soldier and a Navy Corpsman. They were sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, friends and loved ones. In the chaos of those final days, they stood at the gate helping others find their way to safety.

They should never become simply a number in history.

Maureen Gaffney Wolfson created this painting in remembrance of the 13 heroes of Abbey Gate ā€” bringing their faces together beneath the American flag as a lasting tribute to their courage, service and sacrifice.

Yesterday, we remembered the names, the faces and the lives behind that day. The heroes whose stories deserve to continue being told. And who we should continue to remember every day.

13 lives. 13 heroes. Never forgotten. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

From the canvasā€¦ into the community. ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

We are incredibly proud to see this important story featured in the Los Angeles Times ā€” and even more proud to have played a small part in standing alongside the people of Boyle Heights.

For Maureen, art has never simply been about creating something beautiful to hang on a wall. Art can speak. It can bring people together. And sometimes, it can leave the canvas entirely and become part of something much bigger.

Seeing Maureenā€™s Phoenix carried through the community, printed on shirts and signs, and embraced as a symbol of determination and hope was incredibly meaningful to all of us at the Maureen Gaffney Wolfson Gallery of Dreams.

But this story belongs to the community.

We were honored to stand alongside Monsignor John Moretta, Resurrection Catholic Church, local residents and community leaders as they made their voices heard regarding the future of the Boyle Heights warehouse.

Our sincere thanks to the Los Angeles Times and Gustavo Arellano for shining a light on the people behind this effort and the community that continues to stand together.

Sometimes you have to take a step away from the canvasā€¦ and into the community.

As fireworks light up the sky and celebrations fill the air, we pause to remember the meaning behind this day.

The Fourth of July marks the birth of a nation and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 ā€” a moment that forever shaped the story of the United States and established the ideals of liberty, freedom, and self-determination that continue to inspire generations.

For Americans, Independence Day is more than fireworks and festivities. It is a celebration of courage, sacrifice, hope, and the enduring belief that freedom is worth protecting and cherishing.

In this whimsical piece, a young girl rides through the stars beneath a sky alive with color and light, reminding us that freedom also gives wings to imagination, creativity, and dreams. Today we celebrate more than a birthday.

We celebrate more than 80 years of a life lived fully, courageously, and generously.

We celebrate more than 60 years of creativity, imagination, and storytelling through art, television, film, and entertainment. From stages and studios to galleries and canvases, Maureen Gaffney Wolfson has spent a lifetime creating beauty and sharing it with the world.

Yet the greatest measure of her life has never been the roles she played, the audiences she reached, or the remarkable chapters of her career ā€” including her years appearing on the Red Skelton Show.

We celebrate her heart.

A heart that notices the hurting.

A heart that chooses compassion over recognition.

A heart that has spent decades giving back, sharing in the sorrow of others, and searching for ways to bring healing, hope, joy, and restoration through art.

Her paintings do more than capture moments; they tell stories, preserve memories, comfort the weary, and remind us that light can still be found even in difficult seasons.

Today we celebrate a woman who has never stopped creating, never stopped caring, and never stopped believing that beauty can change lives.

This Fatherā€™s Day, Iā€™m reminded that some of lifeā€™s greatest lessons are never taught in a classroom. They are discovered on the journey.

A fatherā€™s influence often comes through shared adventures ā€“ a walk through the countryside, a fishing trip, a long drive, a challenge overcome together, or simply the courage to explore the world with curiosity and wonder. It is in these moments that values are quietly passed on: resilience, kindness, patience, faith, and the confidence to keep moving forward.

Adventure creates opportunities for learning. It invites us to ask questions, make mistakes, discover beauty, and grow into who we are meant to become. Fathers have a unique way of guiding us through these experiences, not always by telling us the answers, but by walking beside us as we find them ourselves.

Today, Iā€™m sharing both the original painting and its Fatherā€™s Day interpretation as a celebration of that journey ā€“ a father and child standing together, radiant in the light of love, discovery, and shared experiences.

May we cherish the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures who have helped shape our paths and encouraged us to embrace lifeā€™s adventures.
