A DARKNESS THAT BURNS AT HELMS THEATER
Dear friends of the theater, mark your calendars! From February 5th to the 7th at Helms Theater, the University of Virginia Spanish Theater Group will be presenting its production, in its original language, of Antonio Buero Vallejo’s En la ardiente oscuridad (In a Burning Darkness).
Buero Vallejo is considered to be one of the most prominent and respected Spanish playwrights of the twentieth century. En la ardiente oscuridad (1951), Buero’s first play, takes place at a unique school for the blind for young adults. The arrival of a new student, Ignacio, will tragically disrupt the apparent joyfulness and self-assuredness that rule the lives of both faculty and students. The play, set in early 1950s Spain during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, brings to light the universal human dilemma of choosing to live blindly rather than facing a devastating truth.
En la ardiente oscuridad is the latest production by the University of Virginia Spanish Theater Group and Director Fernando Operé, who with the help of graduate students and faculty, has been enriching UVA and the Charlottesville community with performances in Spanish by Spanish-speaking playwrights for 35 years.
Don't miss out on this unique theater experience!
