SONEM SONEM is a group of local musicians who's passion is playing traditional Near Eastern music for the local Belly Dance Community.

We are Sudents Of Near Eastern Music SONEM is a group of musicians with a passion for playing music of the Near and Middle East, North Africa and the Balkans. Inspired by the creative interaction with dancers the primarily play with the Belly Dancers at Haflas. The ensemble is under the artistic direction of Kirk Lohry aka Lodro Dawa (BA Music, Naropa University) who has been a student of world music since 1980. Lodro Dawa plays ney, kwala and bansuri flutes, zurna (mizmar) and is also proficient on dumbek, riq, deft, and zills. Joe Cathcart aka Abu Zous – Has studied Egyptian tabla (dumbek) with master drummers Souhail Kasper and Issam Houshan as well as many others and is also proficient on riq and deft. His knowledge of the Arabic Orchestra arrangements and the sophisticated rhythmic changes brings a unique dynamic to the group. Adam Bono aka Nacif – Is the newest member of the ensemble. He plays the oud and is proficient on trumpet and guitar.

Big thanks to Sharon Sharon Rooney Ross of Moonlight Belly Dance for hosting SONEM at her dancing with live music Workshop yesterday and including us at the Oasis of Freedom event.

The Dancing/Music Connection workshop was a very heartfelt and inspiring experience for us and we would love to hear from participants to help us understand how we can evolve it. Some ideas are arising for the "Show play, see hear.... let it go" exercise that spontaneously caputured our attention yesterday. Thanks to all participants for being fearlessly genuine and bringing mindful energy to the workshop space.
