For a friend's birthday: vanilla cupcakes with a cinnamon swirl, cream cheese frosting, and a dusting of cinnamon sugar over the top. Cinnamon has associations with success and prosperity, so a useful thing for a friend running for city council. (So if you're local to Charlotte and electoral politics are an area where you choose to engage, go vote for for one of the at-large seats! He's a great guy doing amazing work in the community, and when we've been out in the streets feeding people, he's been there working every single time.)

Money/work vibes: matcha cupcakes with honey-lemon buttercream and gold coin sprinkles, for a customer interviewing for a promotion. With the amount that matcha powder has gone up in price, this is a premium flavor, so it costs a little more than the regular selections.

The other day, after going to scout out a competing cupcake shop, I went home and drew a card from my old standby deck, the Lo Scarabeo Tattooed Tarot, on the subject of where to focus my energies regarding this enterprise. I've had and loved this deck for close to a decade, and have enough of a connection with it that the messages come through pretty blunt.

Still, I had to laugh at drawing the Queen of Pentacles. In general, she deals in practicality. She hustles all day and still manages to get dinner on the table at night. And on this particular deck, she's represented by a tattoo of a witch on a broom. Hard work, sharing in abundance, and a generous dose of magic. It's about the best confirmation I could get that I'm on the right track.

A chocolate cake recipe that has been in my family for as long as anyone can remember, to call on the Jacobites and bootleggers and hellraisers among my ancestors.

Whiskey in the frosting, to honor the Morrigan, goddess of war, personal sovereignty, and by extension, of revolution. It's been a traditional offering to her for as long as whiskey (or, before it was called that, uisce na beatha, "water of life") has been a thing.

At that point it becomes a prayer to share with my comrades, for strength, solidarity, and protection in the battles that are to come, for my people and my people's people.

Tonight's cupcake: a vanilla rosewater cupcake with a rosewater buttercream and a honey drizzle. While there was a specific intent for this batch, this flavor could be adapted to a number of different needs and occasions. And it's so pretty!

More often than not, the combination of honey, vanilla, and rosewater in spellwork indicates a romantic intent. What many people don't realize is that the combination packs a heavy punch as a defensive working as well, in this case against an unscrupulous landlord. It works particularly well in cases like this where the ill intent comes from a person you'll have to deal with again and have to be a bit cautious with.
