You are enough. Even if the back of your embroidery is šŸ’© (swipe to check it out )
I haven’t posted on my art page for a while. Full disclosure being a mental health counselor right now is not that fun. We are holding a lot. Everyone is. I’m reminded of loving encouragement from a past co worker, it was like her mantra. Whenever it felt like I was hitting a wall, yet another dead end in a broken system, that amazingly fierce woman always said ā€œdo what you can, with what you have, where you are at.ā€ That is enough. You are enough.

This is how much progress I’ve made on my work in progress over the past month. About two inches. In comparison my little indoor garden has just about doubled in size in the same amount of time.

This was pretty in line with what my clients have been feeling this week. Lots of different coping skills, being less productive in areas they ā€œshould beā€ focusing on, adjusting all kinds of expectations. Some are really enjoying this time but feel guilty or selfish for doing so. So if no one has told you, whatever is going on with you is 100% ok. Good, bad, ugly. You can still grieve ā€œsmallā€ losses. You can still celebrate victories. Before being too hard on yourself and your reactions remember that this is a global trauma we’re going through. Whether or not shut downs are financially impacting you, whether or not COVID has reached you or someone you know, this is still a traumatic stressor and our bodies are reacting to protect us. And that’s ok. There is no way you ā€œshould beā€ coping. There is no manual for this. You’re doing great.

Letting Go

I wanted to share an arts based activity I did today. I’ve done this activity many times, letting go of different things, and today I was letting go of my expectations of normal and still giving myself gifts on this very memorable and surreal birthday. At least I can say I’ll never forget the year I turned 27.
Materials: 3 pieces of printer paper, whatever writing utensils available, colors prefered, glue

Prompt: If I held a water bottle out like this with my arm, that’s pretty doable right, no big deal. What if I hold it out for 5 minutes? What about the rest of the day? Or the rest of the week? Sometimes emotions and thoughts can be like that. They give us information in the moment but if we keep holding onto it, it will wear us out. Think of any emotions that are not serving you right now. Think about any anxiety or self-doubt, frustration, sadness.
Step 1, Scribble it out. Use a non-dominant hand, hold multiple tools at once, we’re focusing on getting the feeling out of our body not necessarily drawing something specific. If it helps to write some words you can but you don’t have to. Walk through each side of printer paper
Step 2, Tear it up. Crush it, stomp it, do what you gotta do.
Step 3, Transform it. If it is not transformed it is transferred. What would you like to take away from this feeling, if you could turn this energy towards something productive what would it be? Take the pieces you’ve torn and create an image with them. You can add some drawing to the paper as well if you need to to help create your image.

Sensory grounding

Second skill is super helpful if you’re having a lot of racing thoughts or are very future oriented. This helps bring your focus back to the present moment.šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

Find 5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste

The key is VARIETY. Finding 5 cars you can see in your parking will likely not have much effect. Look at the dark asphalt, the bright red car, the building behind the car, the trees around that building, how stark those trees are against the bright blue sky. Search for different textures to feel like those in the picture- your soft velvety couch and smooth hard table. Taste always has people giving me funny looks. Strong tastes can help ground us, think of a favorite or nostalgic candy and see how long you can let it melt in your mouth. Chocolate is common, my personal favorite are lemon heads or lemon drops that remind me of my grandmother Sarah after basketball gamesšŸ’›

Weaving + Brain Science

First coping skill is my personal favorite, weaving! And here’s my latest . Here’s why weaving is so soothing šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

1.Repetitive motions soothe our nervous system! This is why weaving, knitting, coloring, and even cleaning (wiping/scrubbing) during times of stress is so natural and a great way to cope with anxiety.

2. Crossing the midline! Shoutout to all my PT, OT friends out there. Anytime you use your right hand on the left side of your body, or vice verse, you are crossing over your midline and requiring both hemispheres of your brain to work together. The more often the hemispheres of your brain work together the easier it will be to engage both emotion and logic. So stay sane friends!

and are some of my favorite small business fiber suppliers and they are still open for business!!

also has a free tutorial for weaving a necklace in her highlights that uses a cardboard loom if you don’t have the money to invest right now. Not gonna lie, I started weaving using only cardboard looms!! They’re a great way to try weaving out and see if you like it.

*Shop Update*

Initially I had been planning to reopen my Etsy in the next few weeks. Today was originally dedicated to finishing touches on these new weaves, completing plans to round out the series, and announcing the new date. However in light of COVID-19 and it’s impact on small businesses I have decided not to reopen. Because I have the privilege of doing so.

I am so very grateful that my main source of income is still intact as I’m moving to teletherapy services tomorrow. While my hours will be significantly reduced, I still have a reliable source of income that will cover all my basic needs. I want to leave space for those small businesses that don’t have any other option.

I’m going to keep weaving and creating if only for my own sanity. Being a mental health counselor working with populations in crisis I’m hoping to post content geared towards grounding and coping skills to hopefully help contribute to our collective sense of calm. I’m aiming for daily contributions but extending myself grace (as unplugging from social media is also a great coping skill!) and hoping it helps literally anyone.

If you’ve made it all the way through, thank you. Stay healthy, wash your hands, and remember social distancing is only physical. Love your people!!

We are about to make some amazing art my friends!
But seriously, from a mental health standpoint this chapter has the potential to open our eyes, shift our mindset, and allow us to truly be still! How often in our society do we get that chance?? Moving from an extreme focus on productivity to an excess time for personal pursuits is an enormous change. And social distancing can be isolating. But should we use this time intentionally we can foster habits to carry with us long after this short retreat. Check in with family and friends with calls and handwritten letters, take time to learn a new skill, read a new book, or try that new hobby. Whatever you wanted to do for yourself but put it off because you ā€œdon’t have the timeā€... well you’ve got the time! Embrace it as best you can.
If you need resources for things to do, I’ve put together a packet for my clients with activities for adults and kids, send me a dm I’d be happy to share.
