Black Lives Matter Mural

We decided to take the last couple weeks off even as an account with limited followers to ensure the voices from the Black Lives Matters movement received the platform and attention they deserve.

As we take this Sunday to reflect, we did want to highlight some incredible works art that took place in our city in support of this movement. Last week a diverse group of 16 local artists cane together to Create a custom design for a letter in the phrase “Black Lives Matter” that was painted on Tryon St. in uptown Charlotte. In our eyes this truly illustrates the power of art to transcend differences and boundaries to allow struggling communities to band together for change.

Listed below are the primary artist who contributed to the mural, along with countless volunteers:

* John Hairston
* Owl & Arko
* Dakotah Aiyanna
* Abel Jackson
* Kyle Mosher
* Dammit Wesley
* CHD:WCK

Artist: James Jean
Title: Black Parade - 2006 / ADrift - 2015 / Spring 2020

Description:
I was first introduced to James Jean’s art with the vinyl edition album cover for My Chemical Romance’s - “The Black Parade” released in October of 2006. At the time James Jean was already internationally recognized as a comic book artist, but was just breaking into the contemporary fine arts. In 2008, James Jean retired from comic book illustration to focus on his Fine Arts career which has had huge influence in fashion, pop-culture, illustration, sculpture, and even collector toy industries. He is likely one of the most prominent artists we will highlight but with his level or influence we would be remiss if we didn’t not give credit where credit was due based on his impact on the contemporary art community.

Bio:
“If there was ever a Juxtapoz Hall of Fame, James Jean would be a first ballot inductee. Everything this magazine has stood for, whether it be reinventing the comic book form, learning the expertise of illustration, commercial design and projects to channeling all those skills and benchmarks into a fine art career, James Jean has carried the torch like few other artists of his time. He's massively popular, with museum shows now opening across Asia, famous clients and a one-of-a-kind ability to paint entire worlds onto a single canvas. His imagination and way of internalizing stories and narratives into lush, bright and bold paintings continues to marvel.”

Juxtapoz hosted an excellent podcast “James Jean on the Otherwordly Power of Imagination and Reinvention” releases just last Thursday - May 25th which can be found here - https://anchor.fm/radio-juxtapoz.

Thanks to and for putting this episode together, great opportunity for listeners escape and reflect during these trying times!

In our first week, we’ve highlighted a handful of prominent contemporary artists, now we’d like to shine the light on a lesser known illustrator named Elisa Sanchez out of Charlotte, NC. Artist: Ekundayo
Title: Too Much of Anything - 2007 (I fell in love with this artist because of this piece)
Fantastic Voyage - 2013
Indelible - 2010

Medium:
Mixed Media including spray paint, acrylic, watercolor, pen, and colored pencil.

Description:
Ekundayo’s work uses bold energetic gestures to capture the viewer while the surreal and eerie quality of his subjects draws the audience in, hoping to unravel the deeper message behind the composition.

Bio:
Hawaiian artist Ekundayo, which means ‘sorrow becomes joy’ began his art career before picking up a pen or a paint brush or a spray paint can. Ekundayo’s art doesn’t begin with paint or pencil, it begins with philosophy. That philosophy was cultivated in an unstable early childhood in which he traveled the United States with his father. With his father’s death at age eleven that inherit need for security and shelter was something that Ekundayo learned to cultivate within himself. Childhood was difficult, but it set the framework for the philosophical message he would later in life deliver through art. By transmuting early childhood reversals, Ekundayo passes on his wisdom gained through enduring hardships and realizing that the destination is only the starting point for the next journey. Through his works we are inspired to take an internal eternal journey of self realization and discovery.

Artist: Michael Reeder
Title: Ascension Nine Nine - 2018
Bobby with the Big Hand - 2018

Medium:
Acrylic and Spray Paint on Multilayered Panel

Michael’s iconic style reflects his background and experience in graffiti and large scale murals blending traditional acrylic painting, bold spray paint and pattern screening, with collage style panel layering to create bold and dynamic three dimensional paintings that capture the viewer.

Bio:
Michael Reeder was born in Dallas, Texas in 1982, where he grew up influenced by the local skate and street culture. Post-college, Michael took a job with Eyecon Studios in Dallas, Texas and learned to paint large-scale, traditional murals. These experiences fused with his early graffiti influence formed and grew into his portraiture work today. @ Los Angeles, California
