New York City has finally honoured one of its most influential musical residents: W. 8th Street in Greenwich Village is now officially Jimi Hendrix Way. As reported by Pitchfork, the renaming ceremony took place on June 10, 2026, just steps from Electric Lady Studios, the landmark recording space Hendrix commissioned in 1968 and where countless iconic sessions have been recorded since.

Attendees included his sister Janie Hendrix, producer and engineer Eddie Kramer, and rock veteran Steven Van Zandt, whose nonprofit TeachRock simultaneously announced a new educational partnership with the studio. For Janie, the moment closed a chapter that began almost immediately after Jimi's death at 27 in 1970: the family had circulated a petition inside Electric Lady Studios for years, to little avail. "We used to have a petition in Electric Lady Studios to sign that said, 'Name this street after Jimi,' and it seemed to go nowhere," she told the New York Times. The street sign is now a permanent tribute to the guitarist widely credited with redefining the possibilities of electric music, and a milestone for Greenwich Village's identity as a historic crossroads of jazz, rock and soul.
