I paint a lot, every day, with the expectation that many of my paintings won’t work; that’s the nature of observational watercolor painting. The perfect painting, or just a good painting, captures the dominant color and value of the subject with as few strokes as possible, and no strokes that are unnecessary. Focus must be constant, because paint washes often have nothing to do with the boundaries of physical objects, and also there are many details we should ignore that we would fixate on if we’re not careful. This is St. Michael’s Church. I had painted it for an hour or two before and it didn’t work out. Then I tried it again more successfully (the painting you see here) in my sketchbook knowing I had maybe 20 minutes to do it.
