The joy of winter outdoor painting. I Joined a group of over 20 fellow artists a couple of weeks ago for a wilderness camp winter painting adventure at YMCA Camp Menogyn off of the Gunflint trail in northern Minnesota. An excellent week of painting, friendship, camp fires, dog sleds, sauna & cold plunge, plus the great food and hospitality provided by camp staff. Thanks to the OPM (Outdoor Painters of Minnesota) for organizing the annual event. Everyone’s paintings are on display at the Johnson Heritage Center in Grand Marais, MN until March 22.

Had a nice time oil painting the last couple of days at the 2025 Red Wing Arts Plein Air event. I camped out at Frontenac State Park and thankfully the rain (and the mosquitos) held off! Thanks to the helpful staff at Red Wing Arts Depot, they were great! ,

Shortly after this picture was taken of my easel, sirens, smoke and fire interrupted my painting and I had to rapidly evacuate with fire coming over the ridge about 100 yards behind me. All ended well as I got safely away and the fire fighters were able to obtain the grass fire. So much for a relaxing plein air session. An eventful last day of the challenge!
