I am surrounded by beautiful art every day, either in my gallery or our home. Original art creates mood, shows personality and taste, provides color for any interior design, and is essential for physical and mental well-being. Art fosters aesthetic taste, self-expression, and artistic inspiration. We express ourselves through the things we buy all the time. Owning original art in our home or office is like curating your own art gallery; original art is one-of-a-kind, and therefore your space will be too. Consider when you purchase a work of art, you are not just buying a product; you are acquiring a piece of the artist's creative mind, the sketches that helped formulate that piece, the supplies purchased, the time taken, the rent they pay for studio space, and so on. Original art is not made in a factory. Everything created takes time, energy, and attention to detail. Once a piece is created, the artist can never reproduce it to exactness again. When you buy an original piece, you are purchasing work that does not exist anywhere else. Art can last a lifetime and be appreciated for decades. Most of the art in our collection is one-of-a-kind; this increases the personal value to me, knowing that our home is the only place most of these pieces will be seen.
You may have found a piece that speaks to your soul, but when you ask for a discount, what I hear is, "I like it, but it's not worth what you're asking, and you are not worth what you are asking.
You may genuinely be tight on cash but still want to support an artist. I don't always have the money to buy art, either. Here are some alternative ways of thinking if you love an artist's work.
Start saving - If you are an art-lover and would like to collect art, start by setting money aside for future art purchases.
Ask the artist if they would consider a layaway plan. Some artists may be willing to hold art for you if you cannot pay in full up-front.
Be honest. Tell the artist how much you love their work and but currently, you only have X amount of dollars.
Buy it in good faith. Chances are, if you support your friend/artist, they will support you when you need it.
Put it on your wish list. If you've been eyeing a piece of art, there's no harm in asking your family or loved ones to purchase it as a gift.
I often tell customers the main reason to buy a piece of art is that you love it. Incidentally, buying art or prints from corporate stores means you and thousands of others have the same exact piece. Same picture, same frame, same same same. It's time to let go of the idea some might have that you need to be a millionaire to start an original art collection. Would you put fake books on your bookshelf? (Although I know they exist, and some people do) the same applies to your walls. It is crucial to keep the arts alive by supporting artists however we can. So, if you're thinking of becoming an art collector, shop locally, support your local artist community, go to an art show or call me and I'll set you up.
