Farmhouse art collective

Farmhouse art collective we are artists and thinkers and living beings Please check back every so often to learn more about the past and future events of the farmhouse art collective.

In the spirit of creativity, the farmhouse art collective was formed to promote the creation and experience of artworks in a community setting with the goal of collapsing the barrier between art and life. The FAC was born in the spring of 2012 when a small group of artists desired to create and share works of non-traditional art without the bureaucracy of the formal gallery setting. The FAC wanted

a venue that was immediate and unbound, so they invited others to exhibit at the farmhouse and surrounding two acres that had been their home for many years. After the formation of the collective, the FAC hosted three events that explored art as action, as well as performance and installation art, and creative conversations about what art is and what it could be. Though its founding members have moved away from the property where it began, this has not stopped them from continuing their creative practices and the collective lives on.

This Giving Tuesday, we have gifts for you!

Farmhouse Art Collective’s end-of-year fundraising goal is for 10 people to give a sustaining donation of $25/month or more (or an equivalent one-time donation for the year).

We have some thank you gifts we’re pretty excited about for both one-time and recurring donations, including linocut sticker sets and free class tickets.

If we reach our fundraising goal, everyone who donated will be entered in a drawing to receive a free class from our current list of courses for up to 6 people.

Farmhouse Art Collective is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a community artspace located in the New Bohemia neighborhood of Cedar Rapids Iowa.

Our mission is to inspire and empower ordinary people to create and live more creative lives.

We do this through offering a variety of resources and programming at low or no cost, which include:

Creative classes, Event space activities, Gallery exhibitions and publication opportunities, Retail space for underrepresented artists, Access to our workshop, Art and poetry library, Peer feedback, Mentoring, and most of all, A safe and nurturing environment where people can grow and creatively flourish.

Visit www.farmhouseartcollective.org to learn more about us and how your contributions make a difference.

If giving financially isn’t possible right now, there are other ways to support our nonprofit. You can donate time as a volunteer, tell your friends about our work, like or share our content on social media, or just come out for events and help us build community.

Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement during this season. You’re the reason we’re here and we literally couldn’t do it without you.

Have a beautiful day friends! We’re thankful for you.

Call for work

re:imagine
A Group Show About Influence, Imitation, and Artistic Lineage

This exhibition examines how artists borrow, remix, reference, and reimagine existing works, ideas, and aesthetics—questioning where the line is drawn between influence and imitation. Artists are encouraged to explore gray areas of appropriation and celebrate how art has always evolved through dialogue with other art.

What we're looking for:

• Reimaginings: New pieces that directly respond to or reinterpret iconic creative works, with transparent references to the originals.
• Mashups & Collages: Pieces that mix styles, motifs, or literal fragments of others’ work.
• Open Source Artworks: Participatory or process-based works that invite viewers to copy, modify, or appropriate on-site.

Submission Details:

Deadline: September 25th- 28th (work must be at the gallery by this date.)

Eligibility: Open to all artists.

Mediums Accepted: All mediums are welcome, 2-D work no larger and 16”x 20”. 3-D work no larger than 16”x20”x16”. We’ll do our best to accommodate time-based media, such as video art, sound art, performance art, etc.

Cost: There is no cost to submit your work (small donations to our nonprofit appreciated).

Selling your work: If you’d like your work can be for sale. We don't take a commission, but ask that you donate a portion of the proceeds to our nonprofit.

How to Submit:
Please complete the submission form .com

Exhibition Details:
The exhibition will run from October 2nd – November 30th
Staircase gallery, 1301 3rd St SE, Cedar Rapids IA 52041
Opening reception will be on October 2nd from 6:00 – 9:00pm.

Returning your work:
Pieces may be picked up after the exhibition closes starting December 4th. You may also include a prepaid shipping container and we will mail the work back to you.

spring hopes eternal

for multiple performers, on or around the first day of spring

a specific date, time, location, and signal word or gesture for the event are agreed upon.

each performer prepares by putting on as many pieces of winter outerwear as possible (coats, hats, scarves, gloves, etc).

performers arrive at the location from different directions, a few moments before the agreed upon time.

when the signal word or gesture is given, each person removes their winter items simultaneously, throwing them on the floor or on the ground to create a single giantpile.

the pile should remain intact long enough for performers and bystanders to appreciate the moment and the temporary sculpture that emerged from it.

performers collect their things and leave with hope renewed for what the spring will bring.
a second performance in front of newbo city market with students from metro high school. many thanks to everyone who participated, including art teacher and co-conspirator and .coffeebloom, who donated a lovely bouquet of tulips for our finale.
