Tsunami was an indie rock band from Arlington, Virginia, formed by Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson. Characterized by their muscular guitar sound and powerful vocals, Tsunami were among the most important and original bands to emerge from the American indie scene of the 1990s; the motivating force behind the highly regarded Simple Machines label, Tsunami were noted for their sociopolitical activism and unwavering commitment to D.I.Y. principles, which established them among the most respected voices in the alternative community. They've recently reunited for a gig in LA, and are warming up at the Avalon with what will be their first show in 20 years!

Hey all! Here’s the schedule for xmas week…

Wednesday we had a gong bath with scheduled, but we decided to postpone it because main st as well as church st will be closed down for Catskill’s first solstice walk. We WILL have a fire pit out front, where a group of carolers led by will be gathering…. We’ll be selling dumplings by the fire pit, and will also have a mulled wine special inside.

Thursday is Brian Dewan’s annual Christmas concert… this year’s is a particularly special and popular one so we’re selling tix in advance… pick some up on our website if you’d like to attend.

The genre-defying Mekons formed in Leeds, England in 1977, born form the emerging British punk scene. They progressed from socialist art students with no musical skills to the prolific, raucous progeny of Hank Williams. Theirs is an improbable history – a surprising and influential embrace of folk and country music; with occasional forays into the art world. Throughout their history, they have worked collaboratively and collectively with everything credited to the band, never to individuals. Their mind-boggling output consistently blurs the lines between high art and low and has included exhibitions in the UK and US, a deranged musical recorded and staged with Kathy Acker, an art performance with Vito Acconci, and several books including the unique art catalog/unfinished novel Mekons United.

Juma Sultan has a 60-plus year history as a musician, composer, archivist, activist, and educator. His band, Aboriginal Music Society, has been an evolving collective of musicians for over 50 years, playing a unique, ever-changing, genre-morphing style of music. The current iteration of the band is an exploration of spirit grounded in sound, playing Juma's original compositions, most of which have not yet been released in recorded form.

Juma has played and collaborated with countless signifigant individuals --- Jimi Hendrix, Archie Shepp, Sonny Simmons, Pharaoh Sanders, James "Blood" Ulmer, Dave Burell, Sam Rivers, and many, many more.

Ephraim Asili is an African American artist, filmmaker, DJ, and traveler whose work focuses on the African diaspora as a cultural force. His childhood and adolescence were imbued with hip-hop music, Hollywood movies, and television. Often inspired by his day-to-day wanderings, Asili creates art that situates itself as a series of meditations of the everyday. He received his BA in film and media arts from Temple University and his MFA in film and interdisciplinary art at Bard College. Asili is currently the director of the Film and Electronic Arts Program at Bard College, where he is also an associate professor teaching film production and film studies.

tours through from New Orleans… beautiful atmospheric alt country and Americana, think Neko Case, Wilco, etc. I’ve already been emailed by a couple that’s coming all the way from Burlington to see the show, so if they can drive for over three hours you can probably make it too. Catskill’s own make their debut on the avalon stage - dream pop and orchestral psychedelia. Their recorded work is so great, excited to hear them live.

Friend of Brassroots,

I hope you are doing well! First, I want to thank you for participating in and supporting the festival in the past. The support that we've received from the community over the years, both locally and from surrounding cities, has been astounding to me. Thank you.

You may be wondering what's been going on with Brassroots, so I'm writing now to clear things up. Due to irreconcilable differences, Matthew Fass is no longer associated with the festival. He has however announced his own competing festival, Brazzamatazz, at our former location, Seed Song Farm, and retained our old social media channels which have been renamed for his event.

For the record, the Brassroots Festival is in no way affiliated with Brazzamatazz. Brazzamatazz is not Brassroots with a new name, but an entirely different festival. I understand that there has been confusion on this topic given the fact that Brazzamatazz is being promoted using language and media from past Brassroots festivals, so I hope this email provides some clarity.

As far as Brassroots is concerned, I'll be keeping the festival and brand going and have started new social media channels which you can find here and on IG as . Please follow and share with your brass loving friends and stay tuned for updates. Speaking of which...

When I first had the idea for Brassroots back in 2017, I had no idea it would take me to where I am today. It's been a wild ride, but one I intend to stay on, for my love of brass music and desire to share its ebullience with the world far outweighs the challenges of the growing pains that inevitably occur within these types of projects.

We had an absolute blast last night at our 2022 Grand Slam at a packed to the brim The Avalon Lounge in Catskill where eight On The Fly slam winner competed for the Grand Slam prize. A little while back we helped the band Manu put together a music video for ‘Anthropocene’, the first single of the self-released album ‘Earth’.

The video is actual vintage home video clips of the band members as children, to mirror some of the album’s themes of feelings of loss & confusion surrounding changing neighborhoods and returning to a hometown that no longer feels like home.
