"With the Standards." 2-4 pm. Montano presents Piano Portraits in collaboration with the audience!
Tomorrow (Sunday) from 2-4, legendary performance artist Linda Mary Montano is going to grace us with a performance of her Piano Portraits at HiLo… come talk with the artist and she’ll play and sing a personalized piano portrait for you. It sounds intimidating, but it’s actually probably the most profound, silly, and beautiful thing you’ll experience all week.

Next up in HiLo 2.0 - We are pleased to announce a much-needed reboot of the HiLo food menu, available 7-2 every day (limited items available after 2). We’ve added back customer favorite the Hummus Slammer, as well as a few amazing new items courtesy of chef Michele like a roast chicken sandwich with garlic labneh, knishes, and a southern style breakfast biscuit. We’re moving back to making food to order rather than grab and go, so it might take a little longer but we’ll be able to stop running out of stuff so often! And for your grab and go needs… we’ll have another fun announcement in a couple weeks about a partnership with our friend and former HiLo kitchen witch ! Stop in tomorrow and check it out… due to the small size of our kitchen and unpredictable customer flow we accept in-person orders only, we are not able to accommodate emailed or phoned in orders.
Hey Catskill ! As HiLo approaches our 5 year (!) anniversary, we’re going to be making some changes and injecting a bit of fresh energy in the the place.
The big change is that we have decided to end evening bar service, and just focus on being a coffee shop. The fact is, after the double whammy of moving live music from HiLo to Avalon and then covid totally halting nightlife for a while, the evenings at HiLo never really recovered… our bartender Rose has been keeping a great vibe going on weekends, but at this point we are all ready to shut it down (don’t worry, she’ll be around working shifts at Avalon). While we will always hold a special place in our hearts for the crazy circus that HiLo could be for those first few years - Laura and I working 16 hour shifts, twelve-piece Sun Ra cover bands playing in the back, paint and sips, adult proms, belly dancers, costume parties - we’re hoping to move in to being something a little more sustainable.
So the last weekend to get a cocktail at HiLo will be this coming Friday and Saturday night with Rose, 11/5 and 11/6, 5pm-Midnight. All cocktails $6. “Everything Must Go.” We might not have what you want, but we’ll have what you need.
After that, we are going to be using the extra space behind the bar to start stocking a bunch of fun and unusual new beverages and treats. Kombucha and Nitro Maple Cold brew on tap…. Coconut water / sodas / CBD drinks / Adaptogen elixirs / Shrubs etc. Fun candies, chocolates, and treats like Stroopwafels. Let us know what you can’t find around here and want to see! We’ll be switching our food menu items up - we’ve been lucky to have chef Michele, formerly of Winkle’s, join the crew. And of course as always, our house coffee blend and single origins at the center, which we roast fresh every two weeks at a roasting collective in Queens, expertly prepared by our baristas. If you haven’t stopped in recently, they’ve been serving some delicious new bevs like cinnamon and pumpkin spice lattes, and are about to introduce a spicy Mexican mocha…
Thanks for keeping us alive Catskill - it’s been a quite ride so far, and we’re happy to keep it going -

It’s true friends! We are opening back up for coffee service this FRIDAY - 8AM-4PM every day, staying open later for cocktails on the weekends. We’ll have limited seating available in the back, a couple tables outside, and hand sanitizer for days. We’re returning with a slightly streamlined menu, which will allow us to prep items ahead of time, get you your food quickly, and feature more specials... sorry if that means your favorite sandwich is gone for now (but we are excited about the addition of “the crindy” a sosogood curried chicken salad sammy). Thanks for bearing with us as we figure all of this out, and we look forward to seeing the top halves of your faces soon!
HiLo will NOT be open for happy hour this weekend, so we can start prepping to reopen next week for limited indoor coffee and evening service. We’ll be reducing seating and spacing it out, so you all can be like Fleetwood and Nicks and stay at least six feet apart, and a mask policy will be strictly enforced. See you soon!

In mid-March as the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic set in, we were at a loss as to how we were going to weather this situation financially. One of the first things that set our minds at ease was the generosity of our customers in purchasing gift cards... it provided an immediate influx of cash we were able to use to cover insurance, payroll from the previous weeks, and other unavoidable expenses. We’ve tried to find ways to adapt, but it’s become clear there’s no way to continue safely offering takeout coffee from HiLo, and the logistics of our cafe (huge drink selection, rotating pastries/food menu, low price-point) do not allow for the integration of curbside pickup/delivery.
Our batch cocktail program with Rose was really successful last night... she’ll be here again tonight from 3-6, and in weekends to follow we will likely be able to offer the same program as a curbside pickup/delivery-only service.
Our energies will be focused on delivery and curbside pickup from our sister location the Avalon lounge. We will continue operating there weds-sun and will be expanding our hours to start the day a bit earlier. We’ll still have bulk coffee available to order there. Get in touch if you need some advice on how to brew at home.
In the meantime, we have some perishable goods from HiLo we will be giving away in the next couple days - keep an eye out for that post tomorrow or Monday. We’ll also be strategizing with our baristas on ways to keep them afloat financially, and will let you know if you can help.
We’ve received a ton of support from our customers in the form of purchasing gift cards, and we are so thankful - the money raised from that will be a huge help in getting us through the next few weeks/months. Hi friends - like you, we’re all in the middle of figuring out the best way to deal with this rapidly developing COVID-19 situation in a way that’s most responsible for us, our customers and our employees.
We’ve decided that, given the nature of HiLo as a social space, we are going to start offering only to-go service starting tomorrow (Sunday 3/15) and continuing until further notice. All coffee and food items will be available to take-away... alcohol won’t be an option for now (unless Catskill decides to enact “Vegas rules,” which hey who knows). All seating will be closed off.
This is obviously not an easy decision for us, especially given that HiLo was created and intended to be a place to develop community. But health and safety come first. We so appreciate everyone’s continued support and mindfulness through what is becoming an unprecedented situation.
