We are saddened to hear that the legendary African music DJ, promoter, engineer and one of the most genuine people you would ever meet, Wala Danga, has passed away.

An unsung hero of the African music scene in London, Youssou N’Dour, Angélique Kidjo and Salif Keita would have their first London concerts at Wala’s Limpopo club nights at the Africa Centre. For us, anyone who manages to get the whole of Bembeya Jazz to perform in a tiny club the size of the Africa Centre deserves a medal and an obituary in The Times. An unforgettable night!

Other standout memories were nights where Wala programmed some of the now legends of his home country Zimbabwe, like Stella Chiweshe, Bhundu Boys (of course), Thomas Mapfumo and Oliver Mtukudzi.

And of course Wala championed the local scene also. Two of the bands that were synonymous with the beginning of Sterns Music as a record label - Highlife International and Mose Fan Fan's Somo Somo - both were given a platform by Wala back in the day.

RIP Wala

Wave Farm | Music for the Masses: Fèt Gede

Sunday, October 30th from 1-3pm (EST) on Music for the Masses: Calling all souls to celebrate the Day of the Dead, Haitian style! Every year, the beginning of November brings the sacred and spectacular Vodoun celebration that is Fèt Gede – a raucous, b***y, fiery festival that embodies many of the essential aspects of Haiti’s history and culture. Much like the Mexican Día de los Mu***os, Fèt Gede is a way to pay respects to loved ones who have passed on, through the lwa (spirits) of death and fertility – such as Bawon Samedi (Papa Gede), his consort Grann Brijit, and many others – who guard the cemeteries and navigate the world between the living and the dead. Featuring two hours of mizik rasin (roots music) driven by the Vodoun rhythms and chants that honor the Gede.

Wave Farm | Music for the Masses: 20221023

Sunday, October 23rd from 1-3pm (EST) on Music for the Masses: “Diwali, Light Up the World” – On the eve of Diwali (aka Deepavali) – the five-day Festival of Lights observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains around the world – we celebrate with a wall-to-wall mix of South Asian popular music known as Bhangra. With its roots in India's early agrarian society, Diwali falls on the day of a new moon and coincides with the last harvest before winter, symbolizing new beginnings and the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Bhangra originated as a genre of folk dance and music of the Punjab, performed during the harvest season, and takes its name from bhang (h**p) – once an important agricultural product of that region. Wednesday tune

Testament Ya Bowule from Special 30 Ans Par Le Poete Simaro Et Le Grand Maitre Franco by Le T.P.O.K. Jazz, Le Poete Lutumba Simaro, Le Grand Maitre Franco

Since first opening its doors in 1983, Sterns has been involved with multiple manifestations of African music. But if there is one artist who, to take an image from the title of Graeme Ewen's biography "Congo Colossus", bestrides the whole, it is Franco Luambo Makiadi. Today is the 33rd anniversary of his death.

Sadly, in comparison to Fela, Franco’s discography is not coherent. There are many reasons, not least the sheer volume of recordings Franco released over his lifetime, and even Ken Braun’s masterly ‘Francophonic’ compilations of 2008 and 2009 are no longer easily available, with Volume 1 appearing to have disappeared completely from all digital platforms. However it is still possible to obtain Volume 2, both digitally and physically, and it is from the booklet of the latter that we reproduce Ken’s most eloquent comments regarding this 1986 recording:-

>

The photo is from a concert in Utrecht, Netherlands, on May 9th a year later and is by Ton Verhees. Franco is just visible: the last figure in red on the right.

DakhaBrakha, a Band From Kyiv, Saw a War Coming

For years, the Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha has ended its shows chanting, “Stop Putin! No war!” What they had protested has now come to pass.

“We can’t make any music,” the singer and cellist Nina Garenetska said. “This is our life now: An air raid siren goes off.”

Douglas R. Ewart named 2022 McKnight Distinguished Artist

The McKnight Foundation has named multi-instrumentalist and instrument maker Douglas R. Ewart as its 2022 McKnight Distinguished Artist.

The Jamaican-born artist, who makes his home in south Minneapolis, is best known as a musician, composer, and instrument maker and is equally well regarded as a sound sculptor, painter, writer, and teacher. He has performed worldwide and is renowned for his interdisciplinary work, including performances on a vast range of saxophones, flutes, woodwinds, and percussion instruments of his own design and construction, a craft that reflects his understanding of the importance of sustainable and natural materials.

The award includes a $100,000 prize – an increase from $50,000 in previous years – reinforcing the foundation’s commitment to catalyzing the creativity, power, and leadership of Minnesota’s working artists and culture bearers.

“The panel was moved by the nomination letters that not only spoke of Ewart’s talents and contributions as an artist and trailblazer, but also of the love, deep respect, and gratitude these nominators feel for him,” said Young. “They detailed an artist who lives his creative life thoroughly and shares generously with the community.”

“He moves like a dancer between mediums, genres, and time,” said Seitu Jones, who nominated Ewart and was the 2017 Distinguished Artist Award winner. “His mastery as a musician and visual artist is mind-blowing and defies any attempt to define his life and worldview....We don’t have a word in the English language yet to accurately describe the mix of art and life that Douglas embodies.”

The Jamaican-born artist—who makes his home in south Minneapolis—is best known as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and instrument maker renowned as a sound sculptor, painter, writer, and teacher and will receive a prize of $100,000....

Some evil-minded fool has somehow taken over this page and removed me as admin on my own damn page. I've reported it to FB, but there's no telling how long it might take to get it back.

Un imbécile mal intentionné a en quelque sorte pris le contrôle de cette page et m'a retiré le poste d'admin de ma propre page. Je l'ai signalé à FB, mais on ne sait pas combien de temps il faudra pour le récupérer.
