TODAY: Wednesday 7-9pm in Capitola (Santa Cruz)
Dr. Kim Silverman is our first lecturer of the year!
Dr. Kim Silverman's PhD is from Cambridge. The REAL one. In England.
He is a Principal Research Scientist at Apple. He is a Magician Member of the Academy of Magical Arts, and is "President Emeritus" of the Silicon Valley Society of American Magicians. He has given three invited TEDx talks on aspects of his approach to magic performance. He gave a Commonwealth Club presentation on "Magic, Science, and the Human Mind", which was syndicated to 168 public radio stations nationwide. He was an invited speaker at MagicCon in San Diego. Magic Magazine ran a feature article about him, called "A wizard in two worlds".
Kim does not measure his performance success by how much applause he gets, nor by how much laughter he elicits. Instead, he measures his success by how many people cry, hug him, look him in the eye and say "Thank you! I needed that!". Chris Kenner says: "The only other magician who is like you is David Copperfield" (which Kim does not believe for a millisecond).
This lecture will not teach new tricks. Instead Kim will describe methods to make the magic we already know more impactful, by careful scripting to make the point of the magic much more important to people than "Look! I can trick you!". Drawing from research in Cognitive Science, he will describe two different approaches to this, and illustrate them with material primarily written by himself.
