The Mindset of Tattooing Walk-Ins

There’s a big difference between working in a session-only shop and working in a shop that takes both appointments and walk-ins. The biggest difference isn’t your tattooing—it’s your mindset.

When a walk-in comes through the door, you don’t know that person. You don’t know how they think, how critical they are, or how they’ll judge your work. Some clients are extremely detail-oriented and OCD about every line, every placement, and every little decision. Other clients don’t care and will love almost anything you put on them.

The problem is, you don’t know which one you’re getting.

Because of that, every walk-in has to receive your absolute best. You can’t look at a $200 tattoo that takes 10 minutes and mentally treat it like it’s worth less than a full-day session. The dollar amount should never dictate the effort. Every tattoo that leaves this shop represents you and represents our reputation.

Walk-ins also require a different level of respect. That person may be on vacation from Wisconsin, Indiana, or anywhere else in the country. They go home, show that tattoo to their friends, family, or even another tattoo artist. If the placement is off, the design isn’t executed well, or it looks rushed, someone is going to point it out. Once that happens, the client starts seeing the tattoo through everyone else’s eyes. That can turn into a bad Google review, negative word of mouth, and a reputation that follows you long after that client has left town.

That’s why every tattoo has to be treated like it’s the most important tattoo of the day.

I’m not perfect, and after many years in this industry, I’ve learned this lesson the hard way. Walk-ins are different from your regular clients. Your regulars already trust you. A walk-in doesn’t. You have to earn that trust in a single interaction.

Always stay on your P’s and Q’s. Pay attention. Listen to the client. Try to figure out if they’re particular or easygoing—but never let that change the quality of your work.

Most importantly, never take shortcuts. Every stencil, every line, every placement, every consultation, and every tattoo should be approached with the same level of care and professionalism, whether it’s a first-time walk-in or a client you’ve tattooed for years.

Because at the end of the day, every tattoo leaving this shop is a reflection of who we are.
