Powerful
Brave Woman, also known as Buffalo Calf Road Woman, was a courageous Northern Cheyenne woman born around 1844 and died in 1879. She played a pivotal role in the Battle of the Rosebud in June 1876, where she rescued her wounded brother, Chief Comes in Sight. Her selfless act helped inspire the Cheyenne warriors, leading to their eventual victory. Just nine days later, she fought alongside her husband in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. It was not until 2005 that Northern Cheyenne storytellers broke the silence of more than a century about the battle, crediting Buffalo Calf Road Woman with the decisive blow that brought down Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer from his horse before he met his death.
