You don’t have to earn a finished painting by covering every inch.

Some of the most powerful marks in a painting are the ones that were never made. The bare canvas breathing through. The white holding space where color would have crowded it out.

That’s not laziness. That’s restraint. And restraint is one of the hardest things to learn. 🎨

Six feet. That’s all it takes.

Six feet back and suddenly you see what the painting actually looks like — not what you think it looks like, not what you hope it looks like. The real thing.

Up close your brain fills in the gaps. It shows you what you intended, not what’s there. The only way to see the truth is to get away from it.

Step back. Often. It will save the painting every time. 🎨

Starting with a light background isn’t always the best.

I know it feels natural. You want to see the bright colors, the highlights, the good stuff. But that’s exactly why the painting fights you the whole way through.

Start in the dark. Build your shadows first. Let them dry, let them settle, let them become the foundation everything else rests on.

Then when the light comes — and it will come — it actually glows. 🎨

What are you grateful for this season?

As you take time to reflect on what you’re grateful for this Thanksgiving, consider how you might incorporate gratitude into your daily rhythms beyond this holiday. It’s a practice that gives endlessly. You’ll start noticing all of the beautiful things you once overlooked, and you’ll even begin to find the silver linings in the things that don’t seem beautiful at first.
