Abhean Theatrics Community Theatre

Abhean Theatrics Community Theatre Located in South OC, Abhean Theatrics works with children and teens to develop a love for theatre, increase confidence, and build community.

Our productions range from Shakespeare to fairy tales and murder mysteries to musicals. Catherine has worked in community theatre and associated areas since 1990. She began in Brisbane, working in props for a local community theatre as well as with a number of recreationist groups that focused on the medieval and Renaissance periods. By 2009 she was living in Southern California. She started up a

children's Reader's Theatre group (CCT) in her local homeschooling community which ran until late 2015. Around mid-2014, she also began collaborating with the incredible and very talented Chris Carver (MASQ). producing costumes and props for many of his productions. MASQ has received many Off Broadway nominations over the last few years, including one for Catherine due to her costumes in Alice in Wonderland. Catherine returned to directing when Chris asked her to take over directing "A Charlie Brown Christmas" in 2016. He then offered her the opportunity to direct and produce her own plays under MASQ's aegis during their 2017 off-season. This continued in subsequent years until Chris moved to NYC in 2021 to pursue his acting career. Despite losing her partner in crime, Catherine has continued in community theatre, under the banner of her own company, now known as Abhean Theatrics. In 2022 Abhean Theatrics is focusing upon murder mysteries and will occur "in situ". This is an experimental form of theatre that occurs in non-theatrical areas such as cafes, parks, and other community spaces. The first production, "A Christmas Ghost Story", was held at a local cafe. Past productions include:
* Harry Potter and the Midsummer Madness - a parody of Harry Potter through the lens of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream
* Harry Potter and the Scottish Lords - a parody of Harry Potter through the lens of Shakespeare's MacBeth
* Fairy Tale, Schmary Tale: The Heroes - Ophelia & the Prince, Imogen the White, Red & Romeo, Cordelia & the Beast
* Fairy Tales from the Dark: The Villains - Hansel & Gretel, Winter's Beauty, The Mermaid's Tempest, and Spinning Gold
* Mysterious Goings On - The Caged Genie & Who Killed Cooper?
* Murderous Mayhem - A Killer Tour of the US
* A Christmas Ghost Story

One of the most exciting parts of working with kids in theatre is watching what they go on to do in their lives. Whatever that is.

At the moment, a number of them are involved in things to do with acting and that just makes my heart so happy.

Elena Murray, Puck in my first Harry Potter parody, "Harry Potter and the Midsummer Nightmare" and then Cynthia Harper in "Harry Potter and the Scottish Lords", as well as Alice in MASQ's "Alice in Wonderland, is off working with Disney on its Disney Princess Official YouTube channel and has a recurring guest star role an the upcoming show! Which is awesome!

A***n Simhadri, who rocked the role of Draco Malfoy in both Harry Potter parodies, has done quite a few things in entertainment, including a role in the Off Broadway production of "Trevor". The most recent being a part in Disney's remake of "Cheaper by the Dozen" followed by landing the role of Grover in Rick Riordan's collab with Disney on his "Percy Jackson"!

Others, such as Hailey Hummel and Nikos Ephland, have been in a variety of short films, commercials, and music videos.

And Erin Milne, who worked with MASQ as both an actor in various productions, including "The Odd Couple" and "W***y Wonka", and backstage in management and directing, is now at university in Australia working on a Bachelor's in Creative Technology (stage management, lighting, sound, etc).

Rehearsals for "The Killer in the Coffee Shop" start February 2022. The show will go live in April 2022.

Agatha Christy's Miss Marple meets Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes in this murder mystery play as our cast and audience try to find the killer before time runs out.

This production will challenge the cast with both improv work and breaking the 4th wall. And it will be held at a "real world" location rather than in a theatre. During intermission, performers will eat with their audience, remaining in character as they advance the play's storyline.

"While publishers are trying to figure out how to incorporate
technology, they also continue to be challenged by the picture book
business. "The market hasn't changed significantly in the last few
years," says Hilary Murray Hill, managing director of Scholastic U.K.
"People are tending to stick with the tried and true, with authors and
illustrators with very strong track records. It's harder to break in
new authors.""

Non-traditional publishing is expanding as more established authors choose to try it out.
