The senior thesis film showcase from the 4th-year class at Ringling College of Art and Design has come to an end.

Over the past week, seven short films were shared, each one the result of a full year of production under conditions close to those of the professional industry.
The students worked across departments, managed tight schedules, and carried their projects through with rigor and dedication.

These seven films carry a year of work the Class of 2026 gave everything to, work that deserves to be seen.

Thanks for following along, and keep an eye on these young filmmakers.

FILM SPOTLIGHT #7 - MOTHERHOOD

Written and directed by Lachin Kerbabaeva anihcall, Motherhood is an introspective drama of a mother, Alex, whose 4-year-old child, Tommy, tragically drowns in a pool. Haunted by the endless guilt of not being around him when it happened, she tries to join Tommy in the afterlife by attempting to commit su***de. The story is told through the life review experience, non-linearly, where Alex, submerged underwater, recalls every part of her motherhood, from the happy expectation of a baby, traumatic delivery, postnatal depression, loss of her passion for music, falling apart with her husband, nightmares, and unbearable guilt for not saving Tommy’s life.

🎥 Shot with Angénieux EZ-2 15–40mm and EZ-1 30–90mm.

FILM SPOTLIGHT #6 - A Hill To Die On

Written and directed by Peter Blair Peter Blair, This dark comedy follows washed-up director Jamie Van Hamn as he clings to his once great superhero movie franchise. In a last-ditch effort to save face after an affair with his lead actor, Jamie begrudgingly recruits a Make-A-Wish kid as the new star of his penultimate movie.

Director of Photography’s note - Caleb Ard
“A Hill To Die On pushed me to grow in so many aspects as a cinematographer. From lens choice, camera type, composition, and movement everything had to be incredibly intentional to serve the story and heighten the comedy of every moment. Every choice serves the purpose of the narrative and I was given a lot of creative freedom in the visual style of telling this story. I think it’s my favorite work I’ve done so far in my career.”

🎥 Shot with Angénieux EZ-2 15–40mm and EZ-1 30–90mm and Optimo 15-40mm.

We really enjoyed sharing these projects with you last year, so we’re back for another round! This year, we’ll be featuring seven thesis films instead of six, and we can’t wait to share these filmmakers’ work with you.

Each year at Ringling College of Art and Design, 4th-year students in the Film program take on an ambitious challenge: directing and producing their senior thesis films. These projects are the culmination of their academic journey, year-long productions that reflect real-world, industry-level collaboration.

From preproduction through post, students work across departments including Editing, Sound, Production Design, and more. Each short film is shot over just 1–2 weekends, with months of prep leading up to it.

The result? Professional-grade films that screen publicly and head straight into the festival circuit.

👉 Over the next 7 days, we’ll spotlight one thesis film per day, diving into each project’s vision, story, and team.

Stay tuned, and get ready for tomorrow !

Cinematographer Alex De Pablo looks back on his experience with the Optimo Ultra 12x on the set of “El Ser Querido,” the new film from director Rodrigo Sorogoyen starring Javier Bardem and Vicky Luengo.

The story follows an international director returning to Spain to shoot a film about the Spanish Sahara, all while trying to rebuild his relationship with the daughter he once left behind. A film about family, memory, and the illusions we build around our own narrative.

To match this vision, Alex mixed an unusually wide range of formats over 9 weeks of shooting: black and white and color film in 65mm, Super 35, Super 16 and Super 8, alongside digital in Full Frame, Super 35 and 1/3 inch, combining spherical and anamorphic lenses throughout. One of the most demanding sequences involved an outdoor day scene shot over a full week with 6 cameras running simultaneously, with Alex himself operating one of them.

In the middle of this technical complexity, the Optimo Ultra 12x became a natural choice for its compatibility across formats. Alex highlights its stability throughout the zoom range, along with a look he describes as “sharp but not too much,” with natural color reproduction and pleasing skin tones.

The result is a visual language he calls “simultaneously minimalist and baroque,” shaped through close collaboration with director Rodrigo Sorogoyen.

The film premiered in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival and hits Spanish cinemas today !
