Poesy Shines

Poesy Shines Poesy Shines is New York's ONLY musical poetry combo. The core members are Lil Momma Shinette, Majadi Baruti and Jacob Jurewicz.

Sounds of the Mississippi Delta and Gulf Coast paired with adult contemporary poetry always spark up nostalgia. Poesy Shines is a nostalgic experience for adults seeking to skip the club scene for a melodious tour of the African diaspora. Blues, gospel, jazz, rock and reggae are interlaced beautifully in each performance and then kissed with soul-stirring poetry. Atria Shinette was first inspir

ed to develop a poetry-set-to-music production when she played classical piano amongst Zydeco and Southern Soul story-tellers in south Louisiana. Drummer Aaron Palmer taught himself to play drums as a child in Jamaica and has toured internationally over the last 35 years. Aaron and bassist Efferin Fuse became acquainted through their church. Efferin was born in Florida, but grew up in Buffalo playing gospel music and hip-hop. Jake Jurewicz is the group’s lead guitarist and saxophonist. He received formal training in jazz guitar and audio engineering at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. His volunteer work with PUSH Buffalo exposed him the revolutionary poetry of Dr. Majadi Baruti. Dr. Baruti’s first musical influence was his great-grandfather, Delta Blues legend Johnny Shines. These dynamic artisans are dedicated to authentic musicianship, community activism, and the spoken word.

A piece by DrMajadi Baruti

O Earth, my wounded kin,
I bend low to you now, stomach churning,
heart a storm of salt and ash.
Your skies choke on war's black cough,
rivers run red from Congo's throat,
Sudan's bones bleach under endless fire,
Palestine's olive roots torn by steel.
Fossil greed scars your skin,
U.S. shadows fuel the fever—
madness everywhere, slaughter in the wind,
and my soul heaves, ill with it all.
Yet here I am, bare feet in your soil,
whispering grief to your ancient chest:
Sister, Mother, can you hold this rage?
This nausea of love too vast to bear?
Breathe with me, wild one—
let roots drink my tears,
turn this ache to planetary rebellion.
We endure, we resist, together.
