Natvar Bhavsar builds his color fields from nothing but pure, dry pigment — sifted grain by grain through handmade tools and mesh screens, sealed in layer after layer, sometimes up to eighty deep. Up close, the surface is granular, almost tactile. Step back, and the color seems to float free of the canvas, atmospheric, edgeless. "Color fills the universe," Bhavsar has said. "It has no periphery; it's like looking into space."

Trained among Abstract Expressionists Barnett Newman, Robert Motherwell, and Piero Dorazio, Bhavsar took their belief that color alone could carry a painting and pushed it somewhere singularly his own — informed as much by Holi's clouds of powdered pigment and the rangoli patterns of his Gujarati childhood as by anything he learned in an American classroom.

Opening next Friday, September 18th! Natvar Bhavsar: Free Yourself surveys five decades of the artist's work centered on the power of pure color. Bhavsar builds his luminous surfaces from dry pigment, applied in up to eighty sealed layers through handmade tools and mesh screens, so that color fields seem to float and become atmospheric. His process draws on his Indian heritage, echoing the patterns of Holi and rangoli. Be among the first to see the exhibition at UB Art Galleries while enjoying a cash bar and catered appetizers.

UB Anderson Gallery, 1 Martha Jackson Place
Friday, September 18, 5–8 PM

Natvar Bhavsar: Free Yourself is organized by University at Buffalo Art Galleries and Buffalo AKG Art Museum, and curated by Robert Scalise, UB Art Galleries Director, and Katie O'Hara, Buffalo AKG Assistant Curator. Presenting sponsor: DAG. Additional support provided by Ashok G. Kaveeshwar PhD and Hariastuti Kaveeshwar, and President Emeritus Satish K. Tripathi through the President's Fund for Excellence.

This fall we open three new exhibitions tied together by a question: how do the repeated actions we take—in a studio, during a ritual, or within a community—shape the beliefs we hold?

Natvar Bhavsar: Free Yourself — fifty years of color-field abstraction from a living legend of postwar American art. Sep 18, 2026–Apr 3, 2027 at UB Anderson Gallery. Presented jointly with the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.

Constructed Belief — four artists (Mara Baldwin, Ben Cowan, Nicki Green, Muhammad Z. Zaman) turn gesture into ritual, and ritual into art. Sep 24, 2026–Apr 24, 2027 @ UB CFA Gallery, First Floor.

Karle Norman: Leather Prayers — hand-stitched leather work exploring belief, control, and what it means to walk away. Sep 24, 2026–Apr 24, 2027 @ UB CFA Gallery, Second Floor.

What a day.

Anderson Inside Out 2026 brought out so many new faces and familiar friends — for live music, food, Clayton Pond: A Retrospective, emerging artists, and neighbors connecting with neighbors.

Thank you to everyone who made it possible: our vendors, bands and musicians, community organizations, activity leaders, volunteers, and the incredible UB Art Galleries staff. We couldn't do it without you.

See you next year.

✂️ Get hands-on at Anderson Inside Out!

Our friends from Starlight Studio and Art Gallery will be back this year, leading drop-in collage-making inspired by the work of Clayton Pond — on view now in Clayton Pond: A Retrospective at UB Anderson Gallery.

Pond's paintings and screenprints are full of bold color, repeated patterns, and close attention to everyday objects. Come see the exhibition, then make something of your own. No experience necessary — just curiosity.

Free and all ages. Saturday, July 11, 1–6 PM · UB Anderson Gallery
