There was a popular singer in Poland in the 1930s, with the stage name Adam Aston. Aston sang in Polish, Italian, English, Hebrew and Yiddish. Born Adolf Loewinsohn, he adopted the name Aston at the suggestion of a bandleader, who combined the words As (Ace) and ton (tone), to signify the beauty of Loewinsohn's voice.

Aston avoided the Jewish Holocaust, when he was evacuated with other workers of Polish Radio to eastern Poland. That part of Poland had been occupied by the Soviets, when they carved up Poland in a pact with Hitler's Germany. Aston met very tough times in the Soviet Union. He finally was released with other Poles, and joined the Polish Army, where he continued to share his musical talents. With the army, he traveled through the Middle East, and Italy. Aston settled for a while in South Africa, and then in England, where he died at the age of 90.

The song that we know as "Autumn Leaves" is based on a French song called "Les Feuilles mortes" (Dead Leaves). It was also recorded in Polish, as "Ten zwiędły liść" (The Withered Leaf). Here is an approximate translation of the Polish lyrics:

That withered leaf
is our love carried off somewhere into the world by a storm.

That withered leaf
is something that once was,
A song of our hearts
That's faded away.

A merciless shadow fell upon the soul
But autumn, well, autumn had to come
You're yearning for Spring is in vain
as the wind carries that withered leaf far, far away.
