Nine years ago, Rocks of Unity was a lesson plan I created and taught to my students while in college. Today, it has now outreached to over 25 different countries and over 35 different states. Now, I’m standing in front of its permanent home at the Buffalo Bills Highmark Stadium.
More than 3,000 rocks. Thousands of people. Countless stories, messages, and acts of kindness-each one becoming part of something bigger than any of us could have imagined.
As a Buffalonian born and raised, seeing this installation come to life in the home of the Buffalo Bills feels like a full-circle moment I don’t have the words for. Twenty-year-old me, starting this project with no idea where it would go, could have never dreamed of this. However, this was never meant to be the story of one person. It’s the story of a community choosing kindness. Choosing connection. Choosing to see one another. Choosing to believe that small acts can become something powerful when we do them together.
But there’s something else I never expected. I never expected the reaction this wall would create. I never imagined the large crowds that would stop in front of it and just take it all in. The people who use it as the backdrop for their selfies. The fans who spend time searching through thousands of rocks until they find the one that speaks to them. The people who recognize a message, a name, a memory, or a little piece of themselves in one of these tiny stones, and then take a picture to share it with the world.
To every person who made a rock, shared their story, helped bring this project to life, or simply believed in the message: this is yours, too. 🤍
This installation is now a permanent part of Buffalo Bills history, and I will forever be humbled that Rocks of Unity gets to live here, surrounded by the people and community that helped build it. From a simple lesson plan to a permanent piece of our city. Built by many hands. Held together by one shared belief: we are stronger when we choose each other.
Bills by a billion. Forever and always. When you have the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind because you’ll always be right. 🤍
