About Beth Wheeler:
Beth Wheeler grew up in rural Pennsylvania and attended Saint Francis University. She completed an MA degree in art history at West Virginia University and is currently pursuing an MFA degree in painting at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Having grown up in the woods and mountains, Beth has always held a deep love for nature, and landscape imagery has been the primary subject of her art from a young age. Her paintings depict her interpretations of the places that she personally knows and cherishes.

Artist’s Statement:
Painting landscapes, for me, is about engaging purposefully with the world around me, developing a greater awareness of and appreciation for the places that I live in and travel through. For me, being alone in nature often feels sacred, and painting allows me to process and distill these experiences. To paint the scenes that make me pause and fill me with wonder is to extend and interpret these experiences—to recognize the emotional and spiritual import of these moments; to alter and reexperience through the lens of memory. The process itself seems to me a metaphor for learning to notice and value the subtleties of life, which reveal themselves only when we step out of the bustle of our daily routine and allow ourselves to be stilled, to be truly present and aware and open.

Conceptually, my work explores the intersections between the experience of nature, the act of creation, and the practice of contemplative spirituality. Technically, I am inspired by the traditions of nineteenth-century landscape painting.

The artwork in this exhibit is drawn from the landscape surrounding my home in Indiana, PA, and my parents’ house in rural Patton, about an hour’s drive away. Both are places rich in memory and meaning for me, and I’m enthralled by the timeless, transportive quality of the rolling mountains and pastoral farmland abundant in this region. The work in this exhibition is my attempt to capture the sense of solitude and sanctuary that I find as I wander these places, employing scale, texture, and atmospheric effect to invite viewers into these scenes of simplicity, quietude, and peace.

Hey Everyone,

Due to last week's winter weather, the artist’s reception and talk for Stephen Lawson's “TIME EXPOSED,” exhibition has been rescheduled for Friday, January 21, 2022, at the M.I.B. GALLERY in the Colonial Arts Center at 5 p.m.

Stephen’s work is currently featured in (2) separate international photography magazines, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring him, and his work, to Buckhannon. The exhibition features nearly 40 years of Stephen’s avant garde photography, and we hope you can fit it into your schedules. ART26201 TO PRESENT “TIME EXPOSED” EXHIBIT BY STEPHEN LAWSON AT M.I.B. GALLERY

[BUCKHANNON, WEST VIRGINIA, January 3, 2021—] ART26201 will present “TIME EXPOSED,” a solo exhibition by photographer Stephen Lawson, Friday, January 7, 2022, at the M.I.B. GALLERY in the Colonial Arts Center. About Stephen Lawson:
Stephen Lawson, born in Glasgow, Scotland, studied figurative sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art with a pupil of Charles Despiau. He received an undergraduate degree in 1967, and an MFA from the University of Colorado, in 1970. Lawson taught sculpture at Ohio State University for six years, prior to his relocation to West Virginia.

Artist’s Statement:
Over a period of years my work grew from first roots in sculpture, briefly through Land Art, to a relationship with photo-based art in the landscape, using self-generated camera equipment. Not having had previous photographic experience, this took time and interim failures to gain, in parallel with basic hacksaw and file metalworking.

The images are obviously visual representations, but they are also temporal ones. These are four dimensional in concept and ex*****on, but most frequently only two in the presentation. The concept of space and time is hopefully reconstructed in the mind of the viewer.

My various self-realised cameras give me a fleeting insight across that dimensional divide. Be it a year passing across the image or but moments, this compression suggests we stand back and contemplate, which is always a good thing. I may have been too preoccupied with time passing to notice the passage of it, myself.

The year and day-long works might be thought of as bringing to bear a concentrated gaze; the brief, dynamic shots read as a glance, in the turn of the head, as the eye itself sees, before the mind edits this to a visual memory, often as a ‘still.’ Indeed, all of the images could be thought of as movies presented as stills.

Works are generally titled in handwritten legends; firstly as a homage to the pioneer photographers who likewise went out with their cumbersome apparati to hazard perhaps but one exposure, and secondly, to tell viewers sufficient that they know what underlies what they see.

The work is presented in a poetic mode that asks one to stand briefly outside the usual flow of time, hopefully causing us to reflect on our own ‘time-in-the-world’, individually, culturally, and perhaps now, even as a species.

A new public art project is coming to the Buckhannon community! Congratulations to ART26201 on this win, and thank you to the Central Appalachian Network for supporting creative placemaking in the Mountain State!
We like to cheer for the small wins. The team at ART26201, an all-volunteer-run effort, has come up with a creative tool to help teams show off their small wins - and it's helping them raise funds for their work. Check out how they do it.
What a cool page dedicated to promoting the art community in the Buckhannon area! As someone who’s grown to enjoy different types of art forms, I can certainly appreciate a page like this. Although there are many great art forms that inspire me, my favorite has to be film. I really enjoy and appreciate film for what it is, so I thought I’d recommend a great indie I watched recently for any other film lovers out there. It’s a sci-fi/thriller called Empathy, Inc., and it follows the journey of a recently fired venture capitalist named Joel who finds himself in a horrifying situation when he gets involved with a startup tech company that’s developed a device known as Xtreme Virtual Reality. It definitely reminded me of TV shows such as Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone, so if that interests you at all, I’d highly recommend checking the trailer out on Youtube!
Big news! The Hown's Den will be organizing community critiques in collaboration with art26201. Critiques will be held on the fourth Saturday of the month and are open to the public. We will change locations in and around Buckhannon as artists' needs and interests in the site shift. Our first critique is scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 11-2pm. We have not secured a location yet but we will soon and when we do I will create a sharable event.

We will look at two artists' work per critique session. The first two artists to show work will be Brandon Trawick and me, Crystal Brown.

Are you interested in showing your work and getting valuable community feedback? If so let me know and I will be happy to work with you on a site and date.

3 months ago I became a part of Artistry on Main and have to say I love being in Buckhannon as a small part of the Art scene
Thanks Katie Loudin! We hope to have the marquee back up in the next month or so. More good things to come!
That's a wrap! A special thanks to all of you that contributed and the parents and students for your participation. 2017 is in the books, looking forward to 2018.
