SOMD Quilt Mural #1: Cove Point Park is complete!

It is nearly Thanksgiving and we are PUMPED that we were able to get at least one mural on the map before the end of the year! This mural is located at Calvert County Parks and Recreation’s Cove Point Park in Lusby.

The final design features a mirrored-image depiction of the historic neighboring Calvert Cliffs. These majestic cliffs, rising 100 feet high and stretching 30 miles along the Chesapeake Bay coast of Calvert County, are famous for their Miocene-era fossil shells and shark teeth (some dating as far back as 18 million years), found by countless collectors on the beaches below.

The simple organic shapes contrast with the geometric court striping and are designed to add movement to the courts and complement the back and forth play between the players.

The following photos were taken by all throughout the mural installation which lasted about three weeks. Drone photos were taken by Ray Mahar. Calvert County consulted with on best practices before installation. The mural was designed by and installed by Mid-Atlantic Asphalt . Additional photos were taken during the grand opening, which doubled as a 3-on-3 tournament for local youth.

Look out for a limited edition sleeveless shirt commemorating the Cove Point court mural soon!

Last night Calvert County Parks and Recreation hosted a 3-on-3 tournament at Cove Point Park to celebrate the newly completed basketball court murals, designed by SOMD Quilt Murals and installed by Mid-Atlantic Asphalt. I took these pics during the tournament, which was teeming with young girls and boys excited to play on a landscape of color.

This officially marks Quilt #1 for the SOMD Quilt Murals project. Next time you are in Calvert Counry, you must check them out!

Thank you to for giving me this opportunity and for being a part of this soon-to-be massive project!

More photos and aerial views to come!

Today we met with our paint sponsor, Sneade's Ace Home Center, Inc., and settled on the project’s branded color palette! Which color is your favorite? Do any of these colors remind you of Southern Maryland? Our personal favorite is golden yellow, which reminds us of cornfields, the setting sun and the bald eagle’s beak.

The cat is officially out of the bag. SOMD Quilt Murals are already planned and moving forward. This ten-year project is going to be "very expensive" (insert Pretty Woman tone). While we work on donor tiers and what those look like, you can support the project now by placing your pre-order for a SOMD Quilt Mural shirt today. Shirts will be available for pickup at our booth at the Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert County Fairs. Want to support from afar? We ship!

Today is a big day for us as this marks the moment that we officially announce our project, Southern Maryland Quilt Murals! If you live anywhere in Southern Maryland, chances are you may have gotten wind of this new public art project.

What are Southern Maryland Quilt Murals? In a nutshell: we are aiming to paint at least one mural per zip code in the Southern Maryland region over the next ten years. Ambitious? Yes. Impossible? No...? Using shapes as narrative device, these murals will tell the rich story of Southern Maryland. Eventually, residents and tourists will be able to map out a roadtrip to visit the quilt murals of Southern Maryland.

We have launched a small (for now) website with a brief description of the project here: https://www.somdquiltmurals.com/.

Over the next couple of days, we will continue to add content to the site, including our partners, sponsors, future locations, and more.

In the meantime, you can also check out our first blog post highlighting one of our favorite spots in SOMD, Mallows Bay!
Check it out here: https://www.somdquiltmurals.com/somd-connections/blogpost/aug162024

Lastly, this ten-year project is VERY robust and will include a lot more than just murals, including publications and a documentary. We need all of the funding that we can get! We are looking for collaborators, mural hosts, sponsors, and donors to help make this dream become a reality.

One small way you can help now is by pre-ordering a SOMD Quilt Mural t-shirt here: https://www.somdquiltmurals.com/store/p/pre-order-somd-quilt-mural-logo-tee

Lastly, please like this page and share with your community! The more that people know about this project, the better. We want to hear your stories, big and small. Do you know the history of the land that you live on? What are your favorite SOMD folktales? Where are your favorite local attractions? No story is insignificant here. We want them all!

One of our absolute favorite spots in Southern Maryland is Mallows Bay—Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary. Have you ever been to Mallows Bay to see the ghost fleet of WWI-era wooden steamships (not pictured here)? Fun fact: these ships emerge at low tide and provide habitat important to osprey, bald eagles, herons, and an array of fish, plants, and animals.
