Tonight!
It is an honor to welcome to our theater the magnetic, Grammy-winning legend of Memphis soul, the frontman of Booker T and the MGs, and the genius behind the Staxx Records Sound. Our concert with Booker T. Jones this Saturday 6/20 is sold out, but we want to take a moment to say a few words about this legend of soul music.
Booker T. Jones has been both witness to and architect of some of the most transformative chapters in American music. Best known as the leader of Booker T. & the MGs and for the iconic instrumental hit “Green Onions,” Jones was a founding member of the Stax Records house band and helped shape the Memphis soul sound that left a lasting mark on popular music. In a time of profound social change, Booker T. & the MGs stood out not only for their musicianship but also for their example of collaboration across racial lines, creating music that resonated with audiences far beyond Memphis.
As a keyboardist, songwriter, producer, and arranger, Jones has contributed to some of the most memorable recordings in music history. Even if you don’t know the names, you are likely familiar with the unhurried and playful groove of “Green Onions,” as well as other classics like “Time Is Tight,” “Hip Hug-Her,” and “Melting Pot.” Jones’s prolific career brought him into creative partnership with artists ranging from Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Sam & Dave to Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, Carlos Santana, and Willie Nelson.
Today, Jones remains one of America’s most respected and influential musical voices. His live performances give audiences a rare chance to hear a catalog of timeless songs while also experiencing the living history of American soul, rhythm & blues, and rock and roll from one of its most enduring figures. It is an honor to have him with us!
