Winter is a season of radical rest, repose, and relaxation. Snow and ice blanket the earth, forcing life to slow down and sometimes die. These annual deaths plant the seeds for spring, the ice melts into ground water for their growth. We cannot have new growth without death.
This bust can be a planter or a vase! Icy curls surround a white skull, now devoid of flesh and life and blooms. Only snowflakes and Icy effects adorn her hair. Her wreath of green and red Winterberry is the only sign of warmth and life. There are holes in this wreath to add branches or blooms as extra decor.
In mortal seasons of life, winter is the end for us. In terms of Earthly seasons, we are simply returning to the cycle to create spring. Winter is a repose.
Garden Guardian: Winter Repose. 12 in tall. Standard 420 clay, underglazes, gloss glazes.

Autumn is a time chlorophyll retreat in the leaves, creating all those beautiful golden and red hues that we all love. The harvest reminds us that time is running out for this current lifecycle, the last remnants of life before winter.
Autumn still has growth, blooms, and vibrant color while being a season of decay ; it is arguably the most beautiful season.
This bust can be a planter or a vase! Her wreath has foliage, marigolds, deathhead moths, apples, and golden berries. There are holes in the wreath to place flowers or add other adornments. Small pumpkins, zinnia, and marigolds are set within her red hair. Her face is decayed, revealing the skull underneath as she approaches death. Garden Guardian: Autumn Aging. 12 in tall. Standard 420 clay, underglazes, gloss glazes.

Summer is the season of heat, blooms, crops, and sunshine. Wildflowers dominate untouched fields while bees, butterflies and birds fly about. If it's dark enough, fireflies glitter the blackened evening landscape. Summer is magical.

This bust can be a planter or a vase! There are holes in her wreath to place extra foliage or flowers. She represents the youthful energy of summer, the endless blooming and growing of all living things in youth. Her hair is adorned with flowers, fireflies, wheat, and a black-eyed susan and sunflower wreath.Garden Guardian: Summer Youth. 12 in tall. Standard 420 clay, underglazes, gloss glazes.

Spring brings new life; a season of birth, youth, and renewal. Just as the Earth has a spring cycle, so do our mortal lives. Spring is the first phase of Lifecycles, universal among all living things.
Bees, honeycomb, caterpillars, butterflies, flowers, and daffodils adorn this functional sculpture, with holes on the wreath to add seasonal blooms. She can be a vase or a planter! Embodying growth in every sense, she is spring herself.
A small skull on her shoulder is a reminder that all life comes from death.
Garden Guardian: Spring Child. 12 in tall. Standard 420 clay, underglazes, gloss glazes.
MA Show Lifecycles: Pillars of Growth, March 30-April 10. Artist Talk, April 4, 4pm-6pm. Hood College.

Winterberry is a native Maryland plant, and one of the few blooms seen in the area during snow and ice. The red berries remain as the green leaves fall away, creating a natural bouquet of red-speckled branches coming from the ground.
Winter is often seen as the season of death, but it is truly the season of repose. During the deepest freeze, we have select blooms that color an otherwise monochromatic gray landscape with life. There is always life amid death, and we need death to create new life.
Winterberry Planter. 10 in tall. Standard red clay, underglazes, sgraffito, drawing & painting.

Black-eyed Susans begin in the summer and peak throughout the often turbulent temperature changes of a Maryland Autumn. They grow and spread until the frost forces them to resign, and they add great contrast to any beds. There are a few different varieties, I like the biggest blooms the best.
Even the season of decay has beauty and growth.
Black-eyed susans Planter. 7 in tall. Standard red clay, underglazes, sgraffito, drawing & painting.

Roses have their first bloom in late May, and continue until the frost. The first bloom is always the most impressive! Don't miss it.
Roses are hardy, they lay in wait all winter and then EXPLODE in late spring. I've been growing roses my entire life; my grandmother had 800 miniature rose bushes, the Odessa rose is named after her mother. My mother had dozens of standard roses in our yard. Both beautiful and dangerous, every garden needs roses.
Roses Planter. 10 in tall. Standard 266 clay, underglazes, sgraffito, drawing & painting.
MA Show Lifecycles: Pillars of Growth, March 30-April 10. Artist Talk, April 4, 4pm-6pm. Hood College.
