Happy Valentine's Day! In the spirit of love, I am sharing photos and drawings that inspired the design of my collection 'White Flag" that I completed as part of the Masters Footwear Design program at POLIMODA.

This collection will also be on display at the "Just Shoes!" Art Show February 18th through March 25th at ArteVivo Art Studio with an opening reception this Friday, February 18th from 6pm-9pm.

Love is the inspiration behind White Flag. During the design process it was important to capture not only the divine and glorious nature of love, but also to capture the vulnerability and fragility of love; to achieve a design that embraces both the exaltation and the struggle.

During my research, I came upon a photograph by Tina Modotti of a woman carrying a flag with no identifiable markers. The focus is on the woman, with the flag draping down behind her, a symbol of triumph as she moves forward in life, to conquer further pursuits and passions.

The white flag as a symbol represents both conquest in love and surrender in love. The triumphant woman embraces both.

The inspiration behind the inspiration: C.S. Lewis's "The Four Loves" was a major influence behind the design and direction of this collection. Though not an easy read (for me at least), it was mind-blowing and his reflections on love continue to influence me today.

"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”-C.S. Lewis
The "Just Shoes!" art show may be postponed due to the current COVID surge, but this just makes us more pumped and gives more time to curate a great show for all to enjoy and be safe.

Please follow our pages on Facebook and Instagram to keep informed of when the rescheduled opening reception and show dates are announced.

The confirmation of my career pivot from art education to footwear design happened the summer of 2009 when I studied at POLIMODA fashion institute in Florence, Italy. After researching options, I found that it was cheaper for me to study in Italy and get a Masters there than start all over again here in the States for a fashion degree. However, I still wanted to be sure about the career change so I enrolled in two short courses that summer before I eventually returned in the fall of 2010.

The footwear and handbag design course was so much fun and I was sold right away. But the course in Fashion Job Profiles was also surprisingly fun as it gave us a preview to the different roles, parts and moving gears of the fashion industry. One of my first assignments was to put together this mood board that explored my personal brand identity.

We were advised to pull, cut and paste images from magazines, leather and fabric swatches and internet research printouts that we liked or called out to us into a collage. I remember that my mood board seemed a bit contradictory to some as it had warm and bright elements from Mexican culture and then from these darker and cooler elements from American culture. I am going to guess it comes from my alternative/grunge/rockeros influences of the mid to late 90s; from The Cranberries and Tori Amos to Julieta Venegas y La Ley. It was a challenge to place the look or style of my mood board for my colleagues and professor. It didn’t look like any ONE thing and very hodgepodge and for me that was okay.

Living on the US/Mexican frontera, everyday life is a constant hodgepodge, navigating the churning waters of two cultures in constant exchange. Sometimes it flows seamlessly like Spanglish conversations at a family barbecue and sometimes the exchange can feel like two tectonic plates grating against one another, full of building tension and energy ready to burst.

So does this mood board still express my personal brand identity or brand DNA? I still find it mostly relatable and it’s interesting to revisit where I was 12 years ago in my creative thinking space. It would be a good exercise to repeat and see what results from all that I have absorbed since this pivot began.

Meanwhile, I have a lot of work ahead of me as I prepare for my first shoe art exhibit coming Friday, February 4th 2022 at ArteVivo Art Studio and Gallery in downtown Brownsville. I will be posting less as I grease up the artist gears and get momentum going for this show. I will keep you all up to date as the show develops and welcome you to attend.

The show will have mostly new work and I am excited and nervous to say the least. This will be another big pivot after having been in product design for years, always trying to get into the heads of clients and target markets to deliver a design that translates into a successful product.

Now I need to get back into my own head and reconnect with the young woman who made this mood board. Let’s see where she has been and what she has been up to. 🙂

Carpe Diem! Adelante! Vai, Vai, Vai!
