I paused my current project to make a comfort lovey for a hurting family.
Wanted to make the cutest little lovey doll I saw online and thought, “Oh, that looks easy enough. I can totally make that without a pattern.”
Fast‑forward a day and a half into a three‑day pickup timeline—and I knew I was defeated. That sweet little doll was NOT happening.
So I pivoted to something familiar—my trusty puppy pattern. I’ve probably made five of those puppies, and they’re always quick, easy, and adorable.
Except—of course, it couldn’t be that easy.
Midway through the puppy, I realized I didn’t have enough yarn. So I pivoted again and “borrowed” the legs from a lamb lovey pattern, then went back to the puppy body—but on a much smaller scale. The body worked out perfectly, with yarn to spare.
But when I started assembling everything—the head.
The head looked like a full‑on balloon sitting on a tiny body. So, this puppy had major head reconstruction surgery this morning. I cut her open, removed a couple rows, stitched her back together, and she woke up looking peaceful as ever.
After all the pivots, improvising, shrinking, stitching, and one emergency procedure, she finally turned out exactly how she was meant to—soft pink, gentle white, and a sunshine‑yellow heart.
This is the exact chaos that fills all of my loveys with love—I hope this family feels that love even though I am a complete stranger. And the lovey does exactly what it should do—bring comfort—even if for just a moment.
