Come celebrate curiosity, scientific endeavor, and transformational discoveries with Michael J. Welsh, winner of the 2025 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award.

As a medical student, Welsh encountered a young girl suffering from cystic fibrosis—struggling for every breath and unlikely to survive beyond her teens. Ever since, he has worked to uncover the cellular and molecular causes of the disease and find treatments.

His research has helped transform cystic fibrosis from a terminal illness into a highly treatable condition for most patients, allowing them to breathe easier, live longer, and enjoy a better quality of life. But challenges remain. With a cure still elusive and a percentage of CF patients still not benefiting from new targeted drugs, Dr. Welsh and his colleagues continue to seek novel and better therapies for all cystic fibrosis patients.

Get the Zoom link for this special program, and come learn first-hand from this trailblazing researcher!

BEFORE & AFTER
- Mix up our libation of the night, the “Breathe Easy” (recipes will be on our website)
- Groove to our highly therapeutic playlist
- Zoom in for a chance to win cool prizes!
- Stick around for the live audience Q&A

Michael E. Mann and Peter J. Hotez are two of the world’s most respected and well-known scientists, and they have spent the last twenty years on the front lines of the battle to convey accurate, reliable, and trustworthy information about science in the face of determined, ideologically motivated, and growing opposition.

At the next Secret Science Club Online, they discuss their new book—“SCIENCE UNDER SIEGE: How to Fight the Five Most Powerful Forces That Threaten Our World.” It’s a road map for dismantling the forces of anti-science. Sign up at the link above, and bring your questions!

PETER JAY HOTEZ is a research scientist, pediatrician, and advocate in the fields of global health, vaccinology, and neglected tropical disease control. He is dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, where he is also Director of the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and Endowed Chair in Tropical Pediatrics. In 2022, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on a low-cost, patent-free COVID-19 vaccine. He is a frequent guest on CNN, PBS, NPR, MSNBC, Fox, CBS, and NBC news.

MICHAEL E. MANN is a climatologist, geophysicist, and advocate for the use of scientific research in steering climate policy. He is presidential distinguished professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania, and the director of the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media. He has made significant contributions to the scientific understanding of climate change and contributed to the award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He is the author of more than 200 scientific papers, numerous op-eds, and five books. His work has been featured across the media, from the PBS News Hour to the Guardian.

The giants of Silicon Valley have some bold ideas for the future. In their concept of what lies ahead, trillions of humans will live in space colonies, we will defy mortality to live as long as we desire, and super-smart AI servants will do all the hard work and thinking for us.

At the next Secret Science Club Online, astrophysicist & science journalist Adam Becker—author of the new book MORE EVERYTHING FOREVER—appears in conversation with digital media analyst Dave Karpf. Together, they investigate these techno-visions of tomorrow and whether there is any good evidence they will come to pass.

They ask: Are these tech gurus guiding us toward a better future, or steering us off-course? Are their visionary ideas based on fantasy or real science?

ADAM BECKER is a science journalist and astrophysicist. He has written for the New York Times, the BBC, NPR, Scientific American, New Scientist, Quanta, and other publications. His first book, "What Is Real?", was a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice and was long-listed for the PEN Literary Science Writing Award. He has served as a science journalism fellow at the Santa Fe Institute and a science communicator in residence at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at UC Berkeley.

DAVID KARPF is an associate professor in the School of Media and Public Affairs at the George Washington University. His writing has appeared in Wired, The Nation, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Whether it’s deciding what to eat for lunch or what to do for a career, whether it’s changing our own habits or other people’s minds, Falk and Strecher explore how we can change what we think and do by changing what we think about, and how connecting with our core values can open pathways to more purposeful, fulfilling choices.
