Let’s hear it for the power of the people! Over the past six weeks, we saw firsthand the importance of community. We strengthened our abilities to bring awareness to one another’s needs, and found cohesion in our movements without speaking, but by building upon and honing our group energy from beginning to end. It is in this common ground from which we build our most impactful dances. Thank you to everyone who joined us on this summer improvisation journey - can’t wait to dance together again.

As much as we’d like to leave the past behind sometimes, having reverence for our memories and prior experiences can help us make intentional choices about the future. Our class dove into an investigation of the ways we can honor the past and examined the impact of repeated movement in our dances. Through repetition, we uncovered new meanings in each movement and made bolder decisions.

This past week, we released all the tension…Wait! Sometimes we need tension. Our last class found us sinking into an exploration of opposing forces. How can they be used as tools to build relationships in duets? How do we know what worked?

Meet Kirin McElwain (), multitalented cellist and improviser who is joining us for our Improvisation Series! Kirin has performed with us several times and frequently collaborates with many others in the contemporary dance community. We’re so grateful to have her beautiful live music as part of our class.

It’s been lovely dancing with you! And we’re ready for more…So far in our Improvisation Series, we’ve explored how to find patience and create space for each other as we reenter being in a group, preparing for the unknown, and getting in our bodies more and in our heads less.

How can we contribute to justice and power in our own lives? Tomorrow is Primary Day here in New York City, giving us the opportunity to vote in races for mayor, comptroller, City Council, borough president, and Manhattan district attorney. With hundreds of candidates on the ballot, making a plan beforehand can help us be more informed with our choice-making. Use your voice this weekend by voting in New York City’s mayoral primary! Early voting ends this Sunday, June 20 and Primary Day is next week on June 22. For the first time, the election is using a ranked-choice voting system which allows voters to rank up to five candidates in order of preference for each race. An instant runoff will be conducted if no one candidate wins a majority of first place votes. For more details on ranked-choice voting or to find your early voting polling place, visit https://www.cityandstateny.com/articles/politics/excelsior-newsletter/breakdown-2021-nyc-primary.html.

Why is it so hard to do the right thing? We’re trying to work towards a sustainable, non-hierarchical structure for all aspects of our company. As part of this, we want to divest from corporate banking but are finding that it's way more complicated and difficult than we imagined. We’re also questioning how to organize our company, as we find that the structure of a 501c3 organization doesn’t fully align with our values. Have you tried getting a bank account for your company? Are you as frustrated as we are? Let us know.
