LIBERIA SIGNS US$60M DEAL TO REVIVE COFFEE INDUSTRY

New opportunities are coming for nearly 200,000 Liberian smallholder farmers!

A major US$60 million coffee investment is set to expand production, strengthen farmers’ livelihoods and open new market opportunities across seven counties.

The Ministry of Agriculture and JR Farms Group Inc. have signed an implementation agreement under the Liberia Coffee Prosperity Partnership, a 20-year program running from 2026 to 2045.

Farmers in Bomi, B**g, Lofa, Nimba, Grand Gedeh, Maryland and Grand Cape Mount Counties will benefit from interventions including improved coffee seedlings, nurseries, farmer training, processing support and stronger market linkages.

The program will place special emphasis on developing and promoting Liberica coffee, alongside Robusta and Arabica, while supporting production, processing, marketing and export.

Speaking on behalf of Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, Deputy Minister for Planning and Development Hon. David K. Akoi reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to restoring Liberia’s coffee sector and creating greater economic opportunities for farmers.

From Liberian farms to international markets, Liberia’s coffee comeback is taking shape!

VP Koung Urges Elected Officials to Prioritize National Stability

Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr. urged elected officials from both the Executive and Legislative branches to place citizens’ well-being, peace, security, and national stability above partisan interests.

Speaking at a one-day strategic retreat in Gbarnga, B**g County, for the Unity Party’s 55th Legislative Caucus and allied parties, he highlighted lawmakers’ hard-won experience and called for that knowledge to guide national development. Attending on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Koung said he would report retreat recommendations to the President.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah clarified his movement’s cooperation with the Unity Party is a strategic alliance, not dependence, while Senator Prince Kermue Moye, Sr. urged unity, transparency, and teamwork to support President Boakai’s 2029 re-election bid and warned against actions that could weaken legislative cohesion. The retreat aimed to boost political coordination and solidarity ahead of the 2029 elections.

Liberia National Police Assistant Commissioner Rafell Wilson testified that an audio exchange between Sheik Bansorou Kante and former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor includes discussions about support that would give a group “free passage” to operate a cartel.

Wilson said the recording contains Jewel Howard-Taylor saying President George Weah would be assassinated after three years in power and that “the Kru people” would take his body.

The testimony is part of allegations linking Taylor to a transnational drug‑trafficking network; the claims are being examined in ongoing court proceedings.
Taylor’s lawyers argued the audio recording should not be played in court.

Judicial reporter Fabine Kwiah is covering the hearings.
