AI-powered choral programs are increasingly gaining interest online. These cloud or client-based solutions are designed to generate choral soundscapes by synthesizing and mixing multiple synthetic vocal tracks. I have evaluated one such tool by comparing an 8-track synthetic vocal mix with 4 human singers – double tracked. This resulted in a synthetically sounding mix, lacking vocal passion along with pronunciation challenges. The synthetic vocal generator did not understand how “the” is used and mispronounced common prepositions and Verbs. Another issue was with pitch. The synthetic female vocalists tended to slur into words and be very pitchy with high notes. The male Bass was incapable of singing any note properly below low “A”. However, I expect these limitations will be addressed within the next 12 to 18 months yielding a more human-like sound.
What has become clear is that these programs will take years before they can mimic the vocal passion which is the core of a good choral recording.

Psalm of Thanksgiving is a new work created by Max Stern. It is a Hebrew SATB a ca****la piece inspired by Psalm 100, drawing on Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and the drama of Orff’s Carmina Burana. The soprano begins with a rhythmic motif, followed by voices singing Hariyu Ladonai Kol haaret (Make a joyful noise unto the Lord). Each part joins sequentially, building to a powerful Bou (come). On June 9th at 4 pm, as part of the Music for A Sunday Afternoon Series, The Stony Creek Singers will perform Alleluia by Mozart and That Music Always Round Me by Frank Vasi, which celebrates the greatness of music to express the human experience. The free concert is at Stony Creek Congregational Church and post-concert refreshments will be enjoyed by all.
