The Aaron Milken Center in Los Angeles reimagines early childhood education as a place where learning, creativity, and connection to nature are woven into everyday experiences. This approach comes to life through a series of design strategies:

๐„๐ฅ๐ž๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ : The Center integrates learning into the architecture through flexible spaces and built-in teaching elements that encourage hands-on exploration. Each classroom opens onto an outdoor environment featuring native landscaping, play spaces, and a garden where students can plant and grow food. Every design element supports the developmental needs of young learners of all abilities.

๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ: Color becomes both a design feature and a wayfinding tool. Custom-colored glazed bricks help students navigate the campus, while neutral-toned bricks are interwoven with the colored ones and set vertically to evoke tree trunks.

๐„๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž: Rather than relying on traditional hallways, the Center organizes classrooms and shared spaces around a central, shaded plaza, with open doors and breezeways creating a connected indoor-outdoor learning environment. Its Bel Air hilltop location offers panoramic canyon vistas and access to cooling airflow and direct sunlight.

As back-to-school season begins, weโ€™re revisiting a school that helped define the future of educational design: Crow Island School.

Built in 1940, Crow Island is widely considered the first modern school in the U.S., introducing a new approach to learning environments through child-scaled spaces, connections to nature, and its iconic L-shaped classrooms. When we returned to renovate and expand this landmark project, the goal was clear: to honor its legacy while creating spaces that support the needs of current and future generations.

โ€œWhen you are working on a project that involves a historic building like Crow Island, it is a strong advantage to have a team that considers the value of the relationship that the community has with the building, and the symbolism that the building embodies for so many,โ€ says Dr. Kelly Tess, Superintendent of The Winnetka Public Schools District 36.

CLT is changing how we think about structure, combining the strength of solid wood with the precision and efficiency of modern construction. Made by layering and bonding solid wood panels in alternating directions, CLT creates strong, lightweight structural elements that can be used for walls, floors, roofs, and other building components. Its prefabricated nature can also streamline construction, reduce material waste, and bring greater precision to the building process.

Beyond its structural potential, CLT brings the warmth and natural character of wood into the spaces we inhabit. When thoughtfully designed and made with responsibly sourced wood, it can support lower-carbon design while creating spaces that feel connected to their material origins.

La Plaza Viva, designed in collaboration with The Beck Group and TBG Partners, has received a Merit Award from Architecture at Zero! The competition presents architects, designers, and engineers with a real site, real client, and real program, asking them to embed equity and decarbonization into a design that supports real community needs.

This year's challenge: a venue in Southern California serving as both a year-round educational and cultural space and a resiliency asset that transforms during regional emergencies to support evacuees, first responders, and multi-agency operations.

La Plaza Viva brings these goals to life through:

Exciting news in Miami! Nicklaus Children's Hospitalโ€™s Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower won both Project of the Year and Large Healthcare Project at the IIDA South Florida Chapter Bragg Awards.

The new five-story tower expands the hospitalโ€™s surgical capabilities, bringing together operating rooms, patient care areas, clinics, and support spaces under one roof. Empathy and inclusion are central to the project, with strategies tailored to support children with a wide range of sensory and neurodiverse needs. From arrival through recovery, the patient and family journey was carefully considered to reduce anxiety around surgery while creating moments of wonder, choice, and discovery along the way.

Weโ€™re also honored to receive the JEDI Firm Ambassador Award, recognizing our continued commitment to fostering a more inclusive community, building a diverse workforce, and leveraging our influence to create positive impact in society.

This week, Canada Laboratories launched construction of the Regulatory and Security Sciences Hub, Main Facility, located in Ottawa (RSS Main). This new facility is designed to integrate federal scientific capabilities to protect human and animal health, enhance border security, stimulate the economy, and support international trade. Designed by the Provencher_Roy and Perkins&Will consortium, in collaboration with Smoke Architecture Inc. and the engineering firms AtkinsRรฉalis, BPA, and Introba, the project is overseen by PCL Construction.

It pursues four primary objectives: reducing vulnerabilities in food, animal, and plant health; strengthening emergency preparedness; stimulating economic growth; and promoting innovation and regulatory coherence. The building, targeting LEED Gold certification and net-zero carbon performance, will house laboratories for the CFIA, CBSA, Health Canada, and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Managed by Public Services and Procurement Canada, it will replace aging facilities, thereby improving safety, quality, and resilience.

The next generation of campuses isn't expanding outwardโ€”it's building upward.

In cities where land is limited and real estate comes at a premium, the future of higher education is increasingly vertical. At UC Law San Francisco The Academe at 198, a 656-unit residential tower reimagines the traditional campus by integrating student housing, academic spaces, event venues, retail, and shared amenities into a single urban hub.

The building also reflects a unique housing model, welcoming graduate students from partner institutions to create a multidisciplinary community where future lawyers, physicians, business leaders, and other professionals can learn from one another.

The result is a vibrant vertical campus that strengthens connections among students, faculty, and the surrounding neighborhoodโ€”demonstrating how integrated design can help universities thrive in dense urban environments.

From a declining 1970s mall to an educational anchor.

Today, the 700,000-square-foot campus for the Austin Community College District Highland Campus brings together specialty programs in health sciences, culinary arts, advanced manufacturing, performing arts, and digital media. From nursing simulation suites and teaching kitchens to manufacturing labs, theaters, recording studios, and dance studios, these industry-caliber learning environments prepare students for the region's high-demand careers.

The adaptive reuse project was recently recognized with an Americas Award for Excellence from Urban Land Institute. As one of just nine winners across the Americas, the LEED Gold-certified campus demonstrates how reimagining existing buildings can create lasting value for communities while advancing sustainability.

The William E. Carter School sets a new precedent for accessible design, serving students with developmental and physical disabilities in the heart of Boston.

Conceived like a musical instrument, the design is tunable, precise, and responsive to the human body. Every layer is designed with students' specific needs in mind, carefully considering glare, auditory stimuli, visual range, and color recognition. The school hums in harmony with its surroundings, embracing the ethos of Living Design. Outside, sensory gardens enlivened with native plantings connect students to nature through proprioceptive stimulation, while inside, acoustically calibrated spaces and glare-free, indirect lighting foster an environment where students can learn, grow, and thrive.
