Artists' Theater of Boston

Artists' Theater of Boston Artists’ Theater of Boston produces thoughtful, evocative work that challenges systemic injustices facing our communities through the collaborative process

At Artists’ Theater of Boston, we foster an artistic community that values close collaboration between everyone involved in our work. We want to give our community the space to critically, collaboratively explore a work together. We believe in the inherent value of the collaborative process - it is the artists themselves creating the work, and everyone should have a sense of ownership in this proc

ess. Our community includes skilled craftspeople, scholars, musicians, actors, choreographers, and video artists. If you have any questions or want to talk about possible collaboration, please contact us at [email protected].

Happy 🌟World Theatre Day🌟 from ATB! Last week we presented a staged reading of a new work, Power Play: A Full Length Play about Consent, Bodies, and Fat Liberation, by Core Member Rachel Greene . This was our first in-person event since COVID hit, and we were overjoyed to create meaningful live theatre in community again. We can’t wait for so much more down the line - stay tuned 💞

ATB 💜s new work! We are so thrilled to currently be supporting the developmental workshop of Power Play, by ATB Core Member Rachel Greene . Power Play addresses topics of fatphobia and fat liberation, specifically as they manifest in educational theatre spaces.

💫 When overachieving, agreeable, and undeniably fat undergrad Sarah gets cast to play historical s*x symbol Helen of Troy in a student production, she and her peers are forced to confront their understandings of beauty, s*x, and fatness. To make matters more complicated, a budding tension between Sarah and her on-stage love interest Chris begs the student actors to ask where the characters end and the real bodies begin. With a cast of all-too familiar characters, Power Play puts a magnifying glass to the underbelly of “liberal” and educational theatre-making and the bodies it continues to marginalize.

We are honored to be partnering with notable local poet and writer, Ashley Rose Salomon, on workshopping and producing her first play, The Roslindale Love Canal! This new work, inspired by her striking, poignant poem about the Roslindale “Love Canal” which burst in 1996, will explore the deeper, personal narratives that surrounded this tragic, little-known event in Boston’s history. This year marks the 26th anniversary of this barely known tragedy in our city, and to this day, it is nearly impossible to even find information about its existence; the way it is remembered is through the memories of the survivors. Ashley Rose has a personal account of this event as a survivor of the flood, and in her workshopping process is eager to reflect on the connections between housing insecurity and inequity, hardships faced by the city’s BIPOC community, and what it looks like to heal from trauma, particularly when one’s experiences from a tragedy are disbelieved.

Stay on the lookout for more details on this exciting development process throughout the year! ✨
