Thrilled to receive such a glowing review from The Arts Fuse

The performance conveyed the essence of the Du Bois Orchestra’s mission: when played with exuberance, long-neglected and little-played works can generate as much excitement as they do wonder that they were ever overlooked.

"Music of the slaves," (Afro-American Symphony) - processing last night and what this music means to so many people, is more than we can quantify in one post. The evening was unforgettable.

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT:
We asked Du Bois core member, violist Isaiah Chapman, a few questions - check it out!

-Who is your favorite underrepresented composer?

“My favorite underrepresented composers are between R. Nathaniel Dett and Ulysses Kay. When I was studying at Eastman, I was beginning to compose more, and when I came across Dett and Kay’s music in the library, I really took to their compositional styles. I was tremendously surprised they had not been played more! It was, also, surprising to me that they both studied at Eastman for their Master’s.”

-Why did you choose the viola?

“Well, the viola sort of chose me. I originally wanted to play double bass, but, I was “too short” in 5th grade to play bass. After contemplating not wanting to sit all the time for cello, and not wanting to play violin like everyone else, I chose viola. The past 20 years I’ve been playing has been such a delight!”

Composer, modern/baroque violist, and Pan-Africanist Isaiah Chapman is a records manager and freelancer based in the Greater Boston area. In his second season with the Du Bois Orchestra, Isaiah, also, plays in local and D.C.-based early music and modern ensembles. His intersectional interests in music and GLAMs—galleries, libraries, archives, and museums—has undergirded his activism for the corrective action and presentation of African diaspora collections as well as championing underrepresented composers.
