spent an afternoon at the National Museum of African American Music NMAAM (and saw myself all up in there too 👀 what a most blessed lineage to be amidst and of!..) had the sweetest nourishing experience walking the space with the amazing staff and unpacking artistry and legacy (…liiiike, Billie Holiday’s perfume bottle…Emeraud, “Night in Paris”…I’m tryin to find that y’all!…). anyway…the rabbit holes of study and learning are endless up in here. Def recommend if yall are ever in the Nashville area :)

tee hee, in this interview with Broken Record last year, they got me talking about the making of “esperanza”…doop! thank god for all the learning and figuring out of my own root systems over these nearly 20 years since that album was first released…(oh cause, in case you haven’t heard, i’m releasing “esperanza” on vinyl… pre-order link in bio)

Yes ”esperanza” (my 2008 album) is FINALLY on vinyl!

It’s a joy to hear these older songs and recognize the seeds of many sounds and concepts that would gestate and come forth years later. Listening to the contributions of all the greats who grace this record fills my heart and spirit with immense gratitude. The gift of learning from and working with them early on continues to bless and influence my sense of self and sound. May this format encourage slower more savorful listening.

I’m sooo grateful for the release of this album on vinyl. we’ve played a couple of these songs over the years, but I haven’t spent much time with these early songs and arrangements of mine since originally releasing them. aaaand, I included a couple little gems of songs that didn’t make it onto the original release, but now are finally fitna be heard!

hope you’ll relish in the colours and design (by Brown Alice)
