Two days from now we are asking you to vote yes. Vote yes for the isolated senior citizen who will join a card group at the complex, for the post-surgery adult who wants to ease back into walking in a safe, accessible way. Vote yes for the child who loves the game of basketball and doesn’t have anywhere to play in the winter, for the teen who will play ping pong with friends after school. Vote yes for a space for us all. Vote yes for the health and wellness of Boone’s current and future generations.

Drop a ✅ in the comments if you have voted yes or plan to vote yes.

“Now is the time to invest in the future of Boone by voting in support of the Boone Recreation Complex. Collectively, you can ensure that as the population of Boone grows, spaces are created that promote health, recreation, and community engagement. Together, we can build a brighter future for the citizens of Boone and the overall region, which is thriving, in part, because of the exciting things occurring in your community.”

- Dan Culhane, president & CEO of the Ames Regional Economic Alliance

The Alliance President and CEO, Dan Culhane, asks Boone residents to support a rec center in November's election.

The economic impact in the first year of operation from tournament activity is expected to be around $1.5 million. A common question has been: How would that economic impact expect to be distributed and over what categories of spending?

To me, this metric is more qualitative than quantitative. The more ways we can get people to visit our community, the greater likelihood they will find something to come back for later on down the road. Since we have such a robust number of activities and attractions of all kinds in and around our city, I think the consideration of return visitors is quite important.

Two other areas of economic activity that are not accounted for here is routine visits from folks in neighboring communities who travel regularly to utilize these services and do some additional shopping while in town as well as travel teams which visit for single games not associated with tournaments.

It's important to note that this is not revenue for the facility, it is increased spending from visitors and tourists.

Several folks have inquired about the availability of court space and the number of anticipated tournaments per year (both indoor and outdoor, various sports).

Below is an anticipated breakdown of facility usage during peak times (evenings and weekends). Having four indoor courts allows a robust ability to accommodate both casual and organized usage.

“My favorite thing about the idea of a rec center in Boone is that it helps even the playing field for ALL of our kids. Some families can afford to seek these type of facilities and the opportunities that come with them in other towns around us. Not every family can. For something like this to be in our own backyard, where any kid (or adult!) could more easily get a ride, or even walk to, feels like we are making an effort to prioritize and offer the same opportunities to ALL kids and families. Also, winter is long in Iowa! What a great place to offer social events, recreation, and healthy fun all year round! I truly think it would be an incredible gift and asset to our entire community.”
