Performers believe that directly wishing someone good luck will actually bring them the opposite—a bad performance. By using reverse psychology or "tricking fate," they express a negative outcome with the intent of achieving a positive one. Other sources of the superstition include:
Curtain Calls: To bow or curtsy during a curtain call, performers bend their knees, "breaking" the straight line of their legs. Therefore, wishing someone to "break a leg" is a wish that they perform well enough to earn a curtain call.
The "Leg Line": On early stages, the side curtains were called "legs". Unpaid standby actors had to wait behind this line and would only go on stage—and get paid—if an active actor couldn't perform. Telling someone to "break" (cross) this leg line meant you hoped they got the opportunity to perform.
Vaudeville Booking: In the days of Vaudeville, producers often overbooked performers. An actor only went on stage and got paid if another performer didn't. Saying "break a leg" meant you were wishing your peer a chance to get on stage and earn money.

It's the end of the school year but Theatre is still going strong. We end the year with puppet skits, monologues and songs and I'm always amazed at the creativity of these students. They made me laugh, cry and sing along.
