Mount Genopas is a barren, forbidden peninsula considered cursed by the locals. It was the home of an evil magician who battled against Saint John, but was defeated.

After WW1, Italy occupied the island and built a military fortification on the mountain. The N***s took it over in 1943. This base is now crumbling to ruin.

My goal was to find the cave where the evil magician Genopas lived. It was said he kept deadly Ottoman Vipers as his companions. These snakes are still found on Patmos today.

I had to commit minor trespassing, bypassing two locked gates and two security cameras. Then a huge black mountain goat blocked my path. Watching my step to avoid the snakes, and all this was before I got to the top to search out the cave.

I found six potential cave sites, and I was able to go inside two of them. The others were just too perilous to reach, carved into the side of the mountain.

N***s, occult magic, Christian legends, and snakes: today is probably the closest I’ll ever get to being a real-life Indiana Jones.

Archaeological survey of the Kastelli Acropolis on Patmos Island. This ruined temple of Apollo would have stood proudly on the mountaintop when Saint John arrived on the island in 90 AD. It has never been properly excavated and there are thousands of artifacts strewn throughout the temple complex. I photographed my finds, but left them behind for more competent archaeologists to find someday.

Today I spent a total of three hours (over two visits) inside the Cave of the Apocalypse where Saint John the Divine had his vision of religious ecstasy known as the Book of Revelation. I sat in the cave and read the entire Book of Revelation, meditating on its significance in the place where it was conceived. The Beast, 666, the Four Horsemen, the Seven Seals… It was all shown to Saint John in this spot nearly 2,000 years ago.

Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is neither a cathedral, nor a saint, nor divine. Relatively modern, this structure has some really beautiful elements, but is far from the grandeur of other cathedrals in NYC. Sadly, Saint John iconography was completely lacking. I couldn’t find even one reference to him in the entire cathedral.
