Chad's Poetry Page

Chad's Poetry Page I've always thought of myself as a talker(I think most that know me would agree), and a storyteller. A new form of communication was unlocked.

When I got introduced to poetry, I found that I really enjoyed it. I hope you can relate to some of it.

The prejudiced prosecutor is campaigning for a judge position. So I wrote a poem to campaign and inform the people of what is trying to get behind the bench. I hope you look into it and know your candidates before you vote for them.

"Puppeteered Prosecutor"

The proof has been seen
that justice is not your decider.
You wield the law like a hammer,
at the behest of your provider.
Prejudice drove your prosecution;
obeying the malicious man of mail.
He held power over your appointment-
so you struck down that nail.
My appeal was your chance
to amend Portobello's emotions.
Yet, malfeasance was your choice;
with a mail man-
not justice-
as the speaker of your voice.

Now you vye for the gavel and robe.
3rd seat at district court.
You think that's a good idea,
when your following of the law falls short?

A puppet does not belong
behind a bench ruling on cases.
In the true pursuit of Justice,
facts and evidence matter,
not the peoples' faces.

Your campaign is gathering donations;
money to be spent.
Campaign finance laws exist for this;
to keep track of every cent.
Parades with pachyderm photos,
cups and goodies handed out for a vote;
things required as campaign expenditures-
a thing your finance reports don't denote.
Maybe there's a good reason.
Maybe you're not being shady.
Yet, with your past enjoyment of volleylaw,
it's kinda looking crazy.

The steps of your legal ladder
are built of bone and hair.
You seek a major political promotion,
and expect us not to care
about your past and current transgressions,
ignored law and judicial bias.
A slippery snake with strings attached
wearing a mask of the pious.
So pay attention Shelby County!
Our judicial future could get dark.
If it's a fair and just judge we seek,
this guy is surely not the Mark.

This one was written as I started breaking away from not expressing/ignoring feelings to figuring out why I react the way I do.

"Peeling it back"

Can't show the world
that I carry emotions and doubt.
Gotta pull your britches up,
and figure that s**t out.

Big boys don't cry;
they convey strength,
they convey stability.
Each crack in our foundation
exposes our forlorn fragility.

Feelings have served no purpose-
just unnecessary commotion.
So I stuffed them down inside,
preferring logic instead of emotion.
They used to fit so nicely
in custom-made cages.
Getting stronger in the dark-
breaking out with pent-up rages.

But feelings can be told;
there's healing in the sharing,
gaining wisdom and control-
that first step can be daring.

So I'll get down the cages,
off their high dusty shelf.
Take a fearless moral inventory.
At last,
to learn myself.

Here is the first poem I wrote. My instructor for Eng102, started a poetry section right before Valentine's day last year. He gave us an assignment to write a poem. I naturally chose a love poem for my wife. She is my muse for much of my inspiration.

"My Soulmate"

Monsteras are green
Morning glories are invasive
I'm glad that our souls-
are so nonabrasive.
So far it's been a decade,
happier I could not have been.
I'm so glad to have met you
the yang to my yin.
For the stars we keep reachin',
tryin' to stay leveled up.
With you by my side
I jump like a pup.
When our bodies become entangled
it's like completing a circuit.
The strings to my heart-
you know just how to work it.
Your beauty rivals that
of Venus de milo.
On my face it puts
a great big smile-o.
For when you were created,
broken was the mold.
Together I can not wait,
for us to grow old.
Over these last few years,
of you've over grown fond,
I love you to
infinity and beyond

As I was writing a Valentine's poem for the wife, I was researching the origin of the day. I ended up writing a poem geared towards that and I like how it came out.

"Saint to spending"

Valentine's day
was once Lupercalia.
Originating in Rome,
nowhere near Australia.
Meant to bring about fertility
with the year's end.
The purpose?
To make babies.
T'was quite the trend.
Pairs were matched up
by picking names from hats.
Animals were sacrificed;
their hides used as bats.
Preparing for the new year,
growing the next generation.
Purifying the city
worthy of a celebration.
The pope took offense
to a holiday for a pagan.
Renamed it for Valentine;
a saint in the making.
Valentine was a priest
performing secret unions.
Keeping love alive,
when love was in ruins.
Claudius was irate,
he had outlawed marriage.
"To the gallows!" he said,
shoving Valentine in a carriage.
Fom his dungeon he scribed,
penning a most famous of line.
Signing his loving farewell,
"From your Valentine".
Gelasius turned him saint,
a martyr for religion.
Then Chaucer came along,
adding romance by the smidgen.
The day slowly evolved,
to showings of love.
Chocolates, hearts, or gifts?
Just buy all the above.
Alas, the day has been taken,
hijacked by spending money.
But don't forget the intent,
showering love on your honey.

Here is my first published poem. I was quite pleased with it as the motivating factor of writing this poem "Elusion of Justice" was to get the word out of how a municipality treated a citizen of their city when no crime even occurred(as stated by the victim on stand). It was a pipe dream when I wrote it to get it published in this magazine for even more to see. When it actually happened, it was surreal. I only hope it can be the beginning of change to prevent things like this in the future. Accountability is paramount to a functioning society.
Page 26, BTW.
I hope you also enjoy the rest of the images and words of art from the other published students with their hard work.

As a former LEO, I usually gave police the benefit of the doubt. I have witnessed much on that side of the badge that lead to that system of thinking. Once I was a victim of the other side of the badge myself, it changed my way of thinking. I experienced legal wrongdoings, and prejudiced predatory tactics. I hope you like this one.

"The Other Side"

Once upon a time,
you stood the protector.
the righter of wrongs,
the great corrector.
When our need was so dire,
we told the town crier.
You answered the call.
Just with your presence
there was such an essence.
You gave it your all.

When people said you were no good,
I still stood strong.
I told them that you were for the people,
they were looking at you wrong.

And then you turned on me-
It changed.
I saw the other side.
You bit me like a wolf
wearing the sheep's hide.

Not trying to fight crime,
just helping your buddy.
No quiero facts.
It makes the water muddy.
You don't have our best interests,
just want the job done.
If you can exert a little power
it's all the more fun.
Your job is to protect-
in its place you command.
You're paid by the people-
yet work for the man.

These people with bad experiences
have a legitimate claim.
To get our trust back
is a goal in which to aim.

Elections have turned into popularity contests moreso than electing the most qualified candidate to do the best job. This leads to situations all over the country of injustice and things that just ought not to happen. The "prejudiced prosecutor" for "Elusion of Justice" is actually a candidate for this District Judge seat. That is the exact reason I have been so outspoken about these things. Power should not be granted to those with a history of abusing it.
Vote informed, please.

"Judge of Fairness"

The seat of a judge
is a vital throne.
Not to be filled from handshakes,
but with knowledge known.
When the gavel comes down
and the verdict is told,
no one should leave out
feeling that justice was sold.
Many are vying
for this pivotal role;
not for the people,
but for their own soul.
A step in the path
of their career's trajectory;
not focused on the job,
just the clout in the directory.
You've got current prosecutors
who work for the state,
not looking for justice,
only a win on their slate.
Trying to win the position
by raising money and shaking hands,
yearning for the power
of controlling the lands.
There is one in the field
who thrives for fairness.
He understands the people's distrust,
staying full of awareness.
His past positions
led to the seasoning.
Perfect for the seat,
of ultimate reasoning.
On your journey to the polls
make sure to consider,
the right person for the job,
not just the highest bidder.

I feel like our government no longer represents the best interests of the citizens and I'm not a fan. They use distractions and division tactics to keep us looking at each instead of them. We need to stop hating each other for our political affiliation.

"Distractions"

Our government has decayed;
no longer for the people,
transitioned to a business
of which-
there is no equal.
Lust for power and greed
has become the new norm.
The voice of the people
has been lost in the storm.
Seats no longer occupied
with humanitarian vision;
instead of a republic,
we're run like a prison.
The warden can't be known
as unjust or cruel.
Propaganda keeps us divided
to ensure his rule.
For as long as they keep us bickering
over color and thought,
halftime show singers,
or if he deserved to be shot,
our eyes are averted
while demagogues-
run the lot.
With the team mentality
running rampant through society,
in place of conversation
we're left with anxiety.
So stop hating your fellow
it only digs your hole deeper.
Instead focus your thought
to abolishing the reaper.
Follow the money
in each situation,
to reveal the gapetto;
the true causation.
The strings need to be cut
money shouldn't be the decider.
The interest of the people
should be the sole rider.
Instead of helping your team
you're a digger of your grave-
There's still time left on this earth
for the country in which to save.
