The Sugar Plum Fairy wasn’t actually in the original Nutcracker story. 👀

E.T.A. Hoffmann’s tale was published in 1816 — but the Sugar Plum Fairy we all know and love came later with the ballet.

Today, she has become one of the most iconic roles in all of classical ballet and it’s almost impossible to imagine The Nutcracker without her.

More than 200 years of storytelling, nearly 135 years of ballet tradition… and still creating magic today.

✨ REHEARSAL UPDATE | THE MAGIC IS MOVING! ✨

What an incredible few weeks of rehearsals! Our cast continues to amaze us with how quickly they are learning, working, and bringing A Southern Nutcracker to life. ❤️

🎄 Party Scene — Party Girls, Clara & Nephew are dancing their way through the choreography!! All dances are complete.
🩰 Dolls — moving right along-ONE rehearsal away from being done
🐭 Mice & Rats + Soldier Captains & Soldiers — the Battle Scene is just ONE rehearsal away from being complete!
👼 Little Angels & Angels en Pointe — DONE!
🍫 Chocolate Corps — DONE!
☕ Coffee Corps — moving beautifully-ONE rehearsal away from being done!
🍬 Senior Candy Canes — ONE rehearsal away from being done!
✨ Little & Big Pusharatas — DONE!

And there is still so much more happening behind the scenes!

At this pace, we expect the entire ballet to be choreographed by between the end of September-the first week of October!!!! An incredible accomplishment and a testament to the focus, commitment, and hard work of this cast.

They have been doing SO well that we’re giving everyone next weekend OFF! 🎉 Take the weekend, rest those feet, enjoy your families, and be proud of everything you’ve accomplished.

You’ve earned it. ❤️

Then we come back ready for the next phase… because November will be here before we know it!

The magic really is taking shape. ✨

Rehearsal by rehearsal, step by step, A Southern Nutcracker is coming to life and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s happening in that rehearsal room.

This season, that magic will take the stage at the IP Casino Resort Spa in Biloxi, and we cannot wait to share it with the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

A little glimpse of the magic already in motion… ✨

From New York City to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Mari and Louis our Sugar Plum Fairy & Cavalier are already hard at work preparing to take the stage in A Southern Nutcracker.

These two internationally acclaimed artists will join an incredible cast that brings together professional guest artists, local performers, and rising young dancers, all sharing one stage for something truly special.

World-class artistry. A live orchestra. An extraordinary cast. And it’s all coming together right here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

We cannot wait for you to see Mari & Louis take the stage.

Today, we salute a true original. 🤍

Dolly Parton showed the world just how powerful a life in the arts can be. She gave us music and stories that crossed generations—but perhaps her greatest legacy was the way she used her success to give back, inspire others, and open doors for children to dream bigger.

The arts lost an icon, but the light she created will continue to shine for generations.

Thank you for the music, the laughter, the generosity, and the reminder to always dream big.

🎶 NUTCRACKER FACT OF THE DAY

Did you know that the magical, sparkling sound you hear during the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy comes from an instrument called the celesta?

Tchaikovsky discovered the instrument before The Nutcracker premiered in 1892 and loved its unique, almost otherworldly sound. He used it to create what would become one of the most recognizable moments in the entire ballet.

And this season, we can’t wait to experience the magic of Tchaikovsky’s score LIVE with the Biloxi Civic Orchestra as A Southern Nutcracker takes the stage.

Two rehearsals. That’s it. TWO. ❤️✨

And somehow, our Party Scene is already coming to life in a way that has completely blown me away. Every dance we’ve set is finished, and these performers have given me absolutely everything I’ve asked of them and then some.

Last Saturday and again this Sunday, they walked into rehearsal ready to WORK. They listened. They pushed. They trusted the process. And most importantly, they danced with their whole hearts.

As a choreographer, there are moments when you look around the room and realize what you imagined in your head is becoming something even better in front of you. This is one of those moments.

I could not have asked for more from this incredible group of performers. After only two rehearsals, I am genuinely in awe of what they are creating together.

And the best part? We’re just getting started. ❤️

The Party Scene is going to be something special.

WEEK TWO… and WOW. ❤️✨

These dancers have put in the hours, done the work, and accomplished SO much in such a short amount of time.

✨ Chocolate Corps — finished
✨ Junior Candy Canes — finished
✨ Little Angels — finished
✨ Big Pusharatta’s — finished

And our Soldiers, Mice, Rats, Dolls, Little Pusharatta’s, Big Angels, and Coffee are all just ONE rehearsal away from being finished!!!

Piece by piece, A Southern Nutcracker is coming to life and we could not be more impressed with the dedication of this cast. Long rehearsals, lots of counting, repeating, cleaning…and they keep showing up ready to work.

And tomorrow… the Party Scene takes the floor.🎄
We have a feeling there may be a LOT to brag about after this one.
