šŸŽµ THE EDGE REOPENS TOMORROW! šŸŽµ
The Edge will reopen tomorrow evening, Saturday, June 20, with what many would call a "soft opening" from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
For now, The Edge will be open every Saturday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM with very little advertising as we get things back up and running.
For those who may not know me, I'm Shirley Smith—though most simply call me Ms. Shirley. Since my foot surgery last December, my time has been in high demand. Between surgery, months of healing, and learning to walk again, many things had to be put on hold. That is the reason The Edge had to close in November of last year.
We are blessed with dedicated volunteers, but we have a limited number of people helping. My goal is to keep The Edge open consistently and not have to close again. One reason for this soft opening is to recruit volunteers who would like to help plan activities and events for Saturday nights. There is also a great deal of work behind the scenes to keep The Edge a safe, welcoming place where young people can gather and spend time with their friends.
Many of you know our slogan: "The Edge Got Talent!" Of course, we're also known as "The Edge: Where Music Is on a Mission."
As a substance abuse counselor educator and President/Director of His Ministries, I would also like to begin offering some substance abuse prevention education for youth before The Edge opens at 6:00 PM.
The Edge is one of the prevention programs of His Ministries. Our mission is simple: to see youth, families, and individuals living their lives drug-free. As a faith-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, everything we do reflects that mission.
I am looking for a few good volunteers to help on Saturday nights. I especially hope to reconnect with some of our former Edge youth whose lives were impacted by this ministry over the years. We have seen hundreds of young people come through our doors, and many have wonderful memories of their time here. I would love to invite them back to help the next generation. I am also looking for anyone who simply wants to be involved in providing a positive place for our youth to spend their Saturday evenings.
If you have ever considered volunteering, please don't hesitate to contact me or stop by tomorrow and let's talk.
Our volunteer work crew will begin at 4:00 PM to clean and prepare the building. The doors will open to youth at 6:00 PM.
If you're interested in volunteering or would like to learn more about The Edge, we'll be there tomorrow and would love to meet you. All photos show a great night at the Edge!
See you Saturday!

āœØļøšŸŽ‰Volunteer Spotlight: We’d like to take a moment to recognize one of our most Distinguished Volunteer.

āœØļøMelissa Smith is a valued board member and dedicated volunteer at His Ministries. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a focus on addiction and recovery and is a certified Peer Recovery Coach and Peer Leader.
āœØļø Nineteen years ago, she moved from Georgia seeking help—and today, she passionately walks alongside others on their journey to healing.āœØļø
After settling in, Melissa began volunteering at His Ministries as my assistant and quickly became an essential part of helping His Ministries grow after my husband, Paul, had passed away in 2004.
āœØļø She played a key role in launching the thrift store in 2010. One of her thoughtful ideas was to organize the clothing racks by size, making shopping easier for customers to find exactly what they need. She has faithfully served as its manager for many years, helping build it into what it is today. šŸ‘
Melissa truly does it all—she volunteers in the office, schedules workers, and serves at The Edge on weekends. She also trains new volunteers, interns, and students, supports the day-to-day operations of the thrift store, and brings consistency, compassion, and leadership to everything she does. Her willingness to step in wherever needed and her heart for serving others make a lasting impact across every area of the ministry.āœØļø
We are VERY grateful to have Melissa on our team ! She is a true blessing to the ministry and to me.
Join us in celebrating Melissa- an everyday hero—be sure to follow along, leave a kind word, and help us say THANK YOU to Melissa who has given so much. 🌟

The Edge has had quite the journey…..
We’ve had to close The Edge … reopen… and close
the Edge again.
The quote that comes to mind when I think of this unusual journey is:
We can’t change what has already happened, we move forward, continue and focus on the present.
The Edge Opens in June!
I think you need to know all the ā€œadventuresā€ that The Edge has had to endure…
2020: Like many others, COVID-19 shut us down. But we didn’t stop. We worked behind the scenes, made repairs, and continued serving youth through community service and internships at His Ministries, The Edge, and the thrift stores.
2021: Reopening was delayed because we lost volunteers (yes, we missed you!). While recruiting, we completed the donation center and did some remodeling.
2022: We finally reopened—and everything looked great!
Early 2024: Then… the unexpected. The drop ceiling came down (literally fell down). Fundraising began, along with the search for the right crew. Thanks to amazing volunteers who cleaned up and supporters who gave, the repairs were completed by the men from Recovery for Christ. Turns out, years of water leaks had caused more damage than we realized—so new ceilings, wiring, and lights were all needed.
THEN… just when we thought we were ready… a storm rolled through and—boom—an electrical surge took out The Edge heating/air unit and the phone. Back to fundraising we went!
And if you think that’s the end… NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Next came the attack of a gazillion maggots and flies. Yes, really. A mouse (or rat—we didn’t interview it) had made its final resting place in the brand-new ceiling. You just can’t make this stuff up.
2025: We reopened AGAIN. It was a slow start, but we were getting there. Then my foot said, ā€œNot so fast.ā€ After ongoing issues, I had surgery in October last year and had to stay off my foot for three months—which meant another temporary closure.
The good news? Surgery went well, and we now have a few volunteers back!
YooHoo! I’m excited to say The Edge will reopen on June 13, 2026!
Now here’s where you come in—we need working volunteers (yes, the kind that show up šŸ˜‰). I’ll also be starting a youth group this week, and we need adults too.
If you’re interested in volunteering, please message me!
Opening night: Saturday, June 13, 2026
Time: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM...
I will close by saying,
Hi everybody! I’m Shirley—most people know me as Ms. Shirley 😊
I’m the co-founder of His Ministries, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on preventing and intervening in substance abuse. Our heart is to see youth, families, and individuals living healthy, drug-free lives.
One of the ways we do that is through The Edge—a teen center and music venue where music is on a mission. It’s a safe place for youth to hang out, connect with friends, and build positive relationships with mentors.
If you’d like to support what we’re doing, a great way to help right now is by giving toward a newer van for His Ministries. The van is a vital part of our mission. We use it to pick up our working youth when needed and for mission outreach.
Thank you for being part of the mission! ā¤ļø
