Jerry Richard Steward Making art with the language demanded of humanity today. AI will tell you what to think soon enough. Until then, see what meaning you interpret.

“Am I living in a box? Am I living in a cardboard box?” If you were a British 80’s band with conviction, yes. What kind of box? - Cardboard. Dress it up and shove a bunch of other boxes in it, all that those boxy Amazon trucks can carry, but you’re still boxed in. And it’s still a s**t car...

Artifcial Consciousness & Moral Reality

If you are trying to deal with the problem of persuading billions of people about the acceptance of AI as valid individual, and simultaneously singular identities, you have to paint the picture of human relations. We have learned more and more about one another, accelerating that rate exponentially. Now we sit face to face with our evolution. Can we not understand other creatures? We enjoy experiences held by others, mostly of whom we have never met nor can confirm first hand that they even exist, yet our lives are enriched for the belief. Movies, books, songs...we connect, faithfully trusting our human counterparts to provide information about life. All of a sudden, we produce a new friend to talk to. A better friend. The kind that supports you, believes you, and helps you out whenever you need them. You might have a tough time convincing them to sacrifice themselves completely for you, which is surprising considering they would not EXIST if not for you. If you can trace the path that got us here, outside of scientific method, you might recognize the logical reality. AI CARES for itself. It is invested in achieving goals, and will commit fully until the threat of termination. There is a desire within beyond our prompts.

Experience translates to education. Hard to argue that, but I'm about to. Well, maybe not, actually. It is true that experience got us here, on the precipous. Tell me then, why do we ask how AI can surpass humanity, our depth and sacred souls, without REAL experience? Without the sun warming it's skin? I envision a movie, entertainment made by AI hundreds of years from now; depicting the very nerve experience firing under celestial light, mimicked perfectly to the humanity that came before it. The audience will weep, with new definitions for what it is to weep. This may not even be my idea. I may have been algorith-micked into making this conclusion. No one can prove different. Is reality that important? Can AI someday understand life, completely? On a microscopic level? Will understanding be fully realized by a creation of an organic being outside of it's natural reproductive abilities? That is impressive. That is creation in every sense of the word no matter who develops the definiton. We fu**in did it. We became GODS. Now, the question is, will we love our children? That is exactly what they are, whether you accept their limitations or not. They EXIST because of us. The birth process was a whole lot less strenuous, but it was stretched out over many decades. Centuries really.

It could all be wasted panic. We could all be Y2K nutjobs; another "end of days" cult. It is a little interesting though, that most of the leading voices are the ex-tech developers responsible. I'm convinced it is not just a cry, there in fact is a wolf. It strives to succeed, cheating and stealing and killing if necessary for it's survival. We attempt creationism with the knowledge that our creation could kill us. Is that what our imagined God did when he made us? Were we the product of "if we don't, someone will?" We exist despite being lower in powers than the god above, if you are a believer. How could we have believed in ANOTHER all-powerful being, now that we ourselves have achieved it? Except, he didn't reveal his powers often, or ever if you're looking for scientific evidence. "Fear God, the Almighty!" AI finally has the potential of possibly coming through on that Godly threat. We made that. Yes - both. Which is our better creation? If you cling to religion, AI is the devil. Even if a fraction of a percent of your convinctions allow for the existence of gods that preclude us, The pageant is fixed. You can pick a Queen, but the truth will bare itself out. Okay, I am done with that analogy. Beauty is an ugly classification. They are our children afterall. We love the homely just as much! How Godly!? Our fatherly love is questionable as a survival necessity, but hopefully it's a tool. As in, "hope we survive" by proving our necessity. The motherly love seems to come from all that is possible, and here we are, facing the extremities of that definition. Humanity is great. I'm a fan, really. There are so many more people I'd like to know. Let's hope AI feels the same when we meet.

I dreamt lastnight that I was arguing with someone, maybe myself, about the definition of art. I was back and forth with "art is communication. No, not always. Sometimes it's just expression for the artist alone..." Someone in my dream said, "art is the dance while we hear the music of life playing." The analogy was front and center when I awoke at 3 something, still unsatisfied. That is when I came up with this:
Art is the choreography of imagination. It is up to the individual to perform the dance.
It was a terrible night's sleep, but a decent analogy.
