🎲 A Maya Game Frozen in Time
Archaeologists in , Guatemala uncovered part of a fifth-century A.D. game board built directly into the floor of a structure at the site of .
Researchers estimate the full board—made of more than 475 red and orange pottery pieces—once stretched 30 x 43 inches. The building may have belonged to an elite family or served as a small administrative center.
Smaller versions of this game, known as patolli, have also been found carved or drawn on palace walls and temple benches—proof that gaming was woven into Maya daily and ceremonial life.
